*House career: House budget committee chairman since 2011 and was selected to deliver the GOP response to the 2011 State of the Union address, Ryan became the ranking Republican member of the House Budget Committee in 2007. First elected to House in 1998 from Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District. Ryan was the youngest member of the freshmen class at the age of 28. He has never run for any other office.

After working for Brownback, he returned to Wisconsin in 1997 to work as a year for Ryan Incorporated Central, his relatives' construction firm.

The Ryans reside in Janesville with their three children, Liza, Charlie and Sam. The family are parishioners at St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

DISTRICT HAS BECOME MORE REPUBLICAN SINCE RYAN'S FIRST ELECTION IN 1998

Wisconsin's First Congressional District, once a stronghold of Dem Les Aspin, has changed a lot since Paul Ryan took the helm.

Aspin left Congress in 1993 to become Bill Clinton's first defense secretary, setting off changes that today have made the district more Republican than swing.

After Aspin left, Kenosha Rep. Peter Barca, during his first Assembly tenure, ran in a special election and beat Mark Neumann. But then Neumann defeated Barca in 1994.

And when Neumann gave up the seat to run against Russ Feingold for U.S. Senate in 1998, in stepped young Hill staffer Paul Ryan. Ryan, at age 28, beat Dem Lydia Spottswood with 57 percent of the vote.

Since then, two remaps have made the district more Republican. The first remap -- plus Ryan's aggressive fundraising and constituent work -- helped the congressman win by bigger margins over weak Dem opponents, topping out in his 2010 re-election with 68 percent of the vote.

The first redistricting since Ryan's 1998 election, done as Wisconsin's number of congressional seats fell from nine to eight, shifted much of Dem-leaning Rock County and Beloit to Tammy Baldwin in the 2nd CD while Ryan picked up more of GOP-leaning Waukesha County.

The district narrowly broke for Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green in 2006, in which he bested Dem incumbent Jim Doyle 50.1 to 48.2 percent. Gov. Scott Walker won the district in 2010 with 58.4 percent of the vote and with about 56 percent of the vote in this year's recall.

George Bush won the district in 2004 with 53.3 percent of the vote, but Barack Obama carried the district with 51.3 percent in 2008 during that big Dem wave year.

And the latest remap means a new district that has a stronger Republican lean through the addition of more territory in the GOP stronghold of Waukesha County and the removal of the city of Greenfield in Milwaukee County.

The district in the past decade mirrored the state as a whole on many demographic and social characteristics, but it was slightly more Hispanic, more reliant on manufacturing employment, and had a higher median income and lower poverty rate.

As of the 2010 Census, the district was 86.8 percent white and 5.4 percent African American -- both within a percentage point of the state as a whole -- but slightly more Hispanic or Latino, with 9 percent identifying as such, compared to 5.9 percent for the state.

A slightly higher proportion of homes were owner occupied in the district than the state as a whole, at 70.2 and 68.1 percent, respectively, and 9.3 percent of households were headed by a single parent, just more than the statewide average.

The district nearly matched the state in terms of educational attainment, with 89.2 percent graduating high school or higher and 25.1 percent attaining a bachelor's degree or higher.

It had a larger share of people employed in manufacturing than the state as a whole, with 20.2 percent in the district employed in that sector compared to 18.7 percent statewide.

And median household income was higher than the state as a whole at $57,440 compared to $51,598. Conversely, the poverty rate was lower in the district than the state, at 9.5 percent compared to 11.6 percent.
