U.S. Rep. Moore press conference Milwaukee Area Technical College, S Building Atrium, 700 W. State St., Milwaukee. Gwen Moore Hosts Press Conference on Student Loan Interest Rate Burden Milwaukee, WI (Link) – On Monday, June 10, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) will join Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) students to oppose doubling the subsidized Stafford student loan interest rate from 3.4 to 6.8 percent. If Congress fails to act, the rate will automatically double on July 1. “In our recovering economy, it is absurd that we are even debating whether or not to keep student loan interest rates low,” said Rep. Moore. “Student loan debt has reached over $1 trillion, impacting more than 7 million students. We must come together before July 1 to support our students, not double their burden.” For more information about this press conference, please call Rep. Moore’s Washington, D.C. office at (202) 225-4572 or Kathleen Hohl with MATC at (414) 297-6208 (office), (414) 235-7105 (cell), hohlk@matc.edu. 10:30 a.m. |

Lt. Gov. Kleefisch rededicated Gates Hall Wisconsin Veterans Home, Gates Hall Dining Room, 21425 G Spring St., Union Grove. Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary John Scocos will host a ceremony rededicating Gates Hall as a new skilled nursing home for veterans and their spouses at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove tomorrow, June 11 at 1:00 p.m. In 2004, Gates Hall opened as a 42-bed Residential Care Apartment Complex for elderly veterans and their spouses. Over the past year, Gates Hall was closed and remodeled as a 38-bed skilled nursing facility to meet the changing needs of Wisconsin’s aging veterans demographic. The WDVA was awarded $3,268,501 by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help make the conversion. The facility is named after Marcia Gates, one of the Angels of Bataan in World War II. Gates was an Army Lieutenant and one of 67 nurses held prisoner by the Japanese after the fall of the Philippines in 1942. In 1945, she was liberated from the Santo Tomas internment camp in Manila. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin day of action State St. entrance, State Capitol. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Holds Day of Action Calls on Politicians to Stop Playing Games with Women’s Health MADISON- Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin’s and their supporters will be having a day of action at the State Capitol Tuesday June 11 at noon by the State Street Walkway to urge politicians in Madison to stop playing games with women’s health. Spokespeople will be available for media interviews. We will be watching a game of political ping pong and then delivering the ping pong balls to Republican offices which represent the thousands of women who lose health care access under bills being advanced in the state legislature. In just the past week women’s access to safe and legal abortion is threatened and 90,000 women and families are at risk of losing access to health care in the state budget. Eliminating health safety nets and turning away federal resources so more people go without essential health care will negatively impact individual and community health as well as cost taxpayers’ more money to manage the consequences. The Current Legislative Lowdown in Wisconsin: State budget that takes away BadgerCare for 100,000 Wisconsinites. State budget that takes away health care coverage for pregnant women. State budget that rejects federal funding to expand health care access in Wisconsin. Bill that repeals our Contraceptive Equity law. Bill that takes away state employees’ current insurance coverage for abortion. Constitutional amendment to allow health care providers to refuse a woman birth control, in vitro fertilization, or abortion, even if she will die. Bill that ends safe and legal abortion access for women in Appleton and mandates vaginal ultrasound and lectures for women electing to have an abortion. Two bills that add new and additional restrictions on abortion providers. Contact: Stephanie Wilson 608-256-7549 x 2132 12 p.m. |

DPI press conference Parkway Elementary School, 5910 N. Milwaukee River Parkway, Glendale. State Superintendent Evers, Local School Leaders Gather to Express Concerns on Final Joint Finance Committee Budget Recommendations Group urges legislators to engage in full, open debate on budget bill GLENDALE, Wis. — Local public school officials and State Superintendent Tony Evers will come together Thursday, June 13 to express grave concerns over the recently approved Joint Finance Committee state budget bill. Speakers at the event will cover the following issues: The Joint Finance Committee decision to expand the voucher program is fiscally reckless. The process in which the committee reached its decision to expand the voucher program lacked the appropriate public debate. Voucher expansion is an unproven system that lacks accountability to the taxpayers of Wisconsin. Voucher expansion is an unprecedented intrusion into private and religious education. Ultimately, voucher expansion will negatively impact the children and families of our communities for the foreseeable future. This is a watershed moment in Wisconsin’s history. The budget bill passed by the Joint Finance Committee, if signed into law, will negatively impact the 850,000 children currently served by our public schools, while further destroying a funding system that is already broken. Our communities need to understand that this impulsive decision by Joint Finance Committee members will negatively impact our children and the taxpayers for generations to come. 10 a.m. |

Milwaukee Co. Exec. Abele presents Purple Heart Pass Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, Peck Pavilion, 929 N. Water St., Milwaukee. MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will honor WTMJ-TV Meteorologist John Malan’s military service during the Marcus Center’s annual Flag Day celebration on Friday, June 14th. Abele will present Malan with a Milwaukee County Purple Heart Pass (PHP). The PHP program was started in 2013 as a way to recognize Wisconsin's Purple Heart recipients. Malan received a Purple Heart award after he was shot through the leg during the Vietnam War. “Long before John was warning us of the danger from severe weather, he was serving our country,” Abele said. “This pass is a small way to thank John and all of our Purple Heart recipients for their sacrifice and dedication.” The PHP Program was started by Abele and the Milwaukee County Veterans Service Office. Pass holders get free admission into a number of private and public venues in Milwaukee County and across the state, including the Harley Davidson Museum, Discovery World and the Milwaukee County Zoo. Anyone in Wisconsin who has received a Purple Heart decoration is eligible for the pass; so far more than 300 people have received passes. For more information on the Purple Heart Pass visit: http://county.milwaukee.gov/VeteransAffairs7757/Purple-Heart-Pass.htm Contact: Brendan Conway, Communications Director 414.278.5281 Office Brendan.Conway@MilwCnty.com 11:30 a.m. |
