AFP-Wisconsin, Tea Party Express joint rally Alliant Energy Center, John Nolen Drive, Madison. Madison - On Tuesday, Americans for Prosperity – Wisconsin and State Tea Party Express announced a joint rally in Madison to promote the ideals of economic freedom and limited government. The event will take place at the Alliant Energy Center on John Nolen Drive at 6pm on Friday, June 1st. “We are proud to be joining forces with the State Tea Party Express to promote the ideals of economic freedom and limited government,” said Luke Hilgemann, State Director of AFP-Wisconsin. “Wisconsin has been an example for the rest of the country on what is possible when elected officials make tough budget choices. In less than 2 years we have seen a deficit turn into a surplus, property tax increases turn into a decrease and wasteful state spending turn to billions in savings.” Originally, the two groups were to have separate Madison rallies but chose to hold a single Madison rally to amplify their shared message. The rally will also serve as a stop of the AFP-Wisconsin “A Better Wisconsin: Putting Solutions Before Politics” bus tour. **Media is encouraged to attend the event** “Despite the fact that Wisconsin has taken great steps on the path to budget reform, there is still a long ways to go,” said Amy Kremer, Chairman of State Tea Party Express. “This rally is meant to fire up activists in the area and encourage them to get involved in moving Wisconsin forward. The Federal government has failed to pass a budget in over 1,100 days. We need the Wisconsin way to be an example for the rest of the country.” The Tea Party Express is conducting their seventh national “Reclaiming Our Future” bus tour which will include five days in Wisconsin before continuing across the country and concluding in Florida. Previously, AFP-Wisconsin announced that the rally would be held at the State Capitol, the event has now been moved to the Alliant Energy Center. CONTACT: David Fladeboe – 414-559-0281 6 p.m. |

Multi-Platinum Recording Artists Headline ‘Get Out the Vote’ Rally in Madison Madison Labor Temple1602 S. Park St.Madison, WI 53715 Multi-Platinum Recording Artists Headline ‘Get Out the Vote’ Rally in MadisonAs polls show a dead heat, We Are Wisconsin hosts free event to mobilize troops in massive GOTV effort MADISON—Grammy Award-winning guitarist Tom Morello of “Rage Against The Machine,” singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, Tim McIlrath of the punk rock band “Rise Against,” international touring hip-hop artist Brother Ali and Mike McColgan, the original lead singer of “Dropkick Murphys” and the lead singer of the “Street Dogs,” are all hitting the stage in Madison to turn out the vote in a Wisconsin recall election that’s too close to call. The “Get Out The Vote’ Rally, sponsored by We Are Wisconsin, will provide a massive boost to canvassing efforts days before the recall election on June 5. The event, which will be held at the Madison Labor Temple at 1602 S. Park St., is free to the public with a sign up to volunteer to help get out the vote. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. “Gov. Scott Walker messed with Wisconsin workers and now it’s time to pay the piper,” said Morello. “I’m headed back to Madison with some friends to help yank that right-wing extremist out of office like a bad tooth. We are ready, willing and able to use our music to help rally the troops to do the hard work of knocking on doors and getting out the vote during the last critical hours of this recall election.” McIlrath says his fans often ask how they can get involved with issues of change and awareness. “The frontline happens to be in Wisconsin at the moment, and I'm excited to be out there to help turn out the vote with everyone,” he added. Three different polls released in the past week have shown a dead heat with challenger Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett having clear momentum and a superior field operation. Both sides have consistently said the election will come down to whom has the better ground game and turns out its base. “Wisconsin has the lowest amount of new jobs being created out of all American states and a high unemployment rate,” said McColgan. “Certainly with that in mind Wisconsin needs a change and a break from a governor who is beholden to corporate interests and the American Legislative Exchange Council.” FRIDAY, JUNE 1ST Madison Labor Temple1602 S. Park St.Madison, WI 53715 Doors open at 5:30 p.m. “Working people across America watched aghast as Gov. Scott Walker struck down the right to collectively bargain for Wisconsin State employees,” said Browne. “It’s up to the people of Wisconsin to remove Walker from office, but the fight is an American fight, for a basic American right. I’m coming to Wisconsin to help get out the vote. Recall Scott Walker!” 5:30 p.m. |

Rally with Rev. Jesse Jackson Destiny Youth Plaza, 7210 No. 76th St., Milwaukee. Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr. Wisconsin’s Call to Action Milwaukee, WI - May 31, 2012: This Sunday, June 3, 2012, the Reverend Jesse Jackson of Rainbow Push will join MICAH, Voces de la Frontera, the Milwaukee NAACP, SEIU, AFT Local 212, MTEA , Milwaukee Business Association Organizer Sheikh Mohammad Nazar and Citizen Action of Wisconsin, as well as community leaders, and elected officials to push the vote for the June 5th recall election. The event will feature a musical inspiration by Mark Harris. The event will be held at Destiny Youth Plaza located at 7210 North 76th Street. The doors open at 5:30 pm and the program begins promptly at 6:00 pm. This is a city, state, and national, “Call to Action” which includes all organizations that have worked with the Reverend Jesse Jackson on issues in Wisconsin over the past 2 years. Rainbow Push and partnering organizations will lead a national initiative to get all hands on deck in an effort to take our message to the streets and capture many of the votes missed during the past few elections. The margins were slim and those loses do not have to be repeated. We will go beyond the gap by descending on the streets of Milwaukee and meeting the voters where they are making sure they are informed and they make their voice heard through their vote. We are calling on everyone to assist us with reaching the voters. Let’s push, pull, and call voters to the polls until we have reached every person in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. Everyone MUST vote; every vote counts and every vote must be cast. We will take it to the streets Monday and Tuesday to close that gap. Will you help us America? This is a national appeal. All eyes are on Wisconsin, at least for the next 48 hours. We are making history and we ask you to join this national movement. Knock on doors and call your friends and relatives in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin; we must win. A win in June is another win in November! Marquette Law School conference: Restoring Faith in Government Eckstein Hall, Marquette Law School, Milwaukee. Marquette Law School conference to address the political divide MILWAUKEE – Do we agree on anything? Perhaps only this: We live in polarized times, and discussion of a long list of big issues is marked by acrimony and heated debate, often to the point of deadlock. At the end of the week in which Wisconsin will conduct its first-ever statewide recall election and with the political divide at an all-time high, the Marquette Law School Restorative Justice Initiative will host a conference to examine how public discourse got to this point and how we can move forward beyond it. “Restoring Faith in Government: Encouraging Civil Public Discourse,” will take place Friday, June 8, at Eckstein Hall, 1215 W. Michigan St. The event is $20 for non-Marquette students and employees, and includes continental breakfast and lunch. Registration is required and can be completed online. Presentations will include: •“Political Discourse 101: Why Do Campaigns Look and Sound the Way They Do?” – Leading political strategists on both sides of the aisle and academic experts including Dr. Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette Law Poll, will offer their perspectives on how campaigns are waged today, their consequences and whether change is in order; •“Civic Participation or Recreational Hostility: Policing the Blogosphere?” – Panelists from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Chicago Tribune, Marquette’s Diederich College of Communication and local government will share their perspectives on the Internet as a powerful venue for spreading news or voicing hate, anger or anonymous personal attacks, and the challenge of managing reader comments online; • “From Demoralizing Rhetoric to Respectful Difference: Suggestions for Public Policy Mediators.” – Nationally recognized panelists will talk about their experience with public policy mediation and opportunities for and challenges to using these approaches to controversial issues; • “Name Calling and Personal Attacks on Candidates and Elected Officials – What’s the Impact?” – Current and former elected officials on both sides of the aisle will discuss how the current tenor of the political world affects who decides to run for office, how they run for office, and, ultimately, how they can govern; and • “The Future: Is the Next Generation Optimistic?” – Students from the Marquette University Les Aspin Center for Government will discuss why they want to pursue public service work. Keynote speaker John Avalon, senior columnist for Newsweek and The Daily Beast, CNN contributor and author of Independent Nation: How Centrism Can Change American Politics and Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America, will give a presentation about his views on healing the polarization in America. A full conference schedule and list of panelists is available online. Contact: Brigid O’Brien Miller Phone: 414-288-7445 Email: brigid.miller@marquette.edu 8:30 a.m. |

First Unitarian Society service to address Wisconsin's divided community Unitarian Meeting House, Madison. Karen Gustafson Encourages Citizens to “Summon Our Better Angels” MADISON, WI – Regardless of the outcome of today’s June 5th election, this week will mark the culmination of an ongoing effort to reset the political course of Wisconsin. This coming Sunday, Karen Gustafson, Associate Minister of the First Unitarian Society, will urge people to encourage healing where they can in order to address our divided communities. “It’s time to focus on essential principles beyond politics,” said Gustafson. “After today, the people of Wisconsin will have spoken, and whatever the result, it is time to focus our energies upon addressing the divide.” In keeping with the Society’s stated principle of promoting the democratic process in society at large, Gustafson will share ways we can heal in “summoning our better angels”. The Society is housed in the new wing of the historic Unitarian Meeting House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of its members. Wright was commissioned to design the Meeting House in 1946, construction began in 1949, and was completed in 1951. It is recognized as one of the most innovative examples of church architecture in the country, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In 2004, it was officially declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. The services will be held on Sunday, June 10th at 9:00 am and at 11:00 am, and media are welcome to attend or film from the private balcony. For more information, visit http://fusmadison.org. Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold addresses Milwaukee Rotary Club Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee. Senator Russ Feingold will discuss his new book While America Sleeps, which addresses our nation's collective failure in responding properly to the challenges of the post-9/11 era. The book covers the negligent and willful oversimplification of complicated new problems, as well as a sometimes cynical exploitation of the fears generated by 9/11, which have undermined our ability as a nation to adjust effectively to a new paradigm for America’s place in the world. While much of the book focuses on the missteps of the last ten years, it concludes not only with hope, but with specific solutions to help America better connect with the rest of the world. 12 p.m. |

23rd Annual Energy Fair ReNew the Earth Institute, 7558 Deer Road, Custer. The Energy Fair is days away! Waste no time in packing your bag(s), strategize how you’ll see everything, and find your way to Custer before the sun rises on Friday, June 15th. We’ll be here to greet you and look forward to creating a generous amount of unforgettable memories before dusk on Sunday. If this is your first Energy Fair, you’re in for a treat. You’ve likely never seen such a combination of professional and roots-down in one location. We recommend that you soak in as much knowledge as you can during the day and then let loose to the music at night. This is the strategy of the staff who run the fair all day, yet somehow still manage to dance late into the night. It’s as Norman Vincent Peale said, “The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have.” If you’re a veteran fair-goer, welcome back! We’re excited to hear what adventures you’ve enjoyed since the last summer solstice and hear your ideas for the future. 9 a.m. |

Milwaukee, WI – On Friday, June 15, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) in cooperation with local organizations will host a voter ID town hall to educate her constituency on the importance of protecting voter rights. This event will feature a panel of experts who will not only discuss how voter ID laws disenfranchise voters, but will explain what our community can do to fight back. “Our right to vote, a right that those before us have fought to attain, is under attack,” said Rep. Moore. “Milwaukee would be especially affected if voter ID laws were enacted. Our vote is our voice. We must not be silenced. As a Member of Congress it is my responsibility to help protect the rights of my constituency, not dismantle them.” For more information about this town hall, please call the Milwaukee office at 414-297-1140 or visit the Facebook event page at http://on.fb.me/LMGGzw. Milwaukee Ald. Donovan streetcar project rally & petition drive McKiernan’s Pub, S. 37th and W. Becher St., Milwaukee. Alderman Bob Donovan will hold a rally and news conference at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, June 16) to energize volunteers who will then fan out across the city to solicit signatures in opposition to the proposed downtown streetcar project. The event will take place outside McKiernan’s Pub at S. 37th and W. Becher Streets. “I fully expect a huge number of petition circulators to take part in tomorrow’s efforts, and by God you will see them in many parts of our city,” said Alderman Donovan. Also, in a letter sent yesterday to Mayor Barrett, the alderman again asks for a public referendum on the streetcar project, stating that he is convinced that 70% of city residents don’t support the project. Just as he did in previous letters to the mayor (that received no response), Alderman Donovan also again suggests using the $65 million for the streetcar project to repair city streets – something that could create up to 1,000 jobs. Democratic National Committee’s “Romney Economics: The Middle Class Under the Bus” Tour Madison Labor Temple Parking Lot, 1602 S Park St., Madison. In Advance of Romney’s Bus Tour, Democrats Will Highlight Romney’s Failed Economic Record and Vision MADISON, WISCONSIN— Advancing the route Mitt Romney will travel over the coming days as part of his bus tour, the Democratic National Committee’s “Romney Economics: The Middle Class Under the Bus” tour will visit Madison, Wisconsin SUNDAY, June 17 at 11 am CDT to discuss Mitt Romney’s real economic record and highlight the broken promises Romney made while running for governor of Massachusetts for more jobs, less debt, and smaller government – the same promises he is making today. Once in office, Romney failed to keep those promises: he sank Massachusetts to 47th out of 50 in job creation, hiked taxes and fees by $750 million a year, and left taxpayers with the highest debt per person in the country. The tour will feature representatives from Massachusetts who will speak from firsthand knowledge about what Romney Economics meant for economic growth and the middle class. While the President has outlined a clear plan to grow the economy, create middle-class jobs and pay down our debt in a balanced way, Mitt Romney has provided no real plan to help the middle class. Instead he has promised economic policies that are familiar and troubling: more budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer rules for Wall Street, the same formula that benefited a few, but crashed our economy and devastated the middle class. Romney Economics didn’t work then, and it won’t work now. The four-day DNC bus tour will make at least ten stops across the six states Romney is visiting. The DNC bus already stopped in Exeter, NH and Scranton, PA Friday; is stopping in Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio on Saturday; Madison, WI and Davenport, IA on Sunday; and Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit, MI on Monday. Massachusetts and local elected officials and other prominent surrogates will appear on the tour along with the DNC’s Brad Woodhouse. WHAT: Press conference as part of the DNC’s “Romney Economics: The Middle Class Under the Bus” tour to highlight Mitt Romney’s failed Massachusetts record and vision WHO: DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Mahlon Mitchell Massachusetts State Representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein Jen Hollis, Massachusetts Teacher 11 a.m. |

CRSC presents “Transportation Options for a Strong Economy” Memorial Union, UW-Madison. The Capital Region Sustainable Communities (CRSC) partnership will host Scott Bernstein, President of the Center for Neighborhood Technology, for a free presentation event titled “Transportation Options for a Strong Economy” on Wednesday June 20th at 4:30 p.m. at the UW’s Memorial Union. Bernstein will address the connections between transportation and the regional economy, and present the newest data available for Dane County using the H+T® Affordability Index, a tool created by CNT to measure the combined cost of housing and transportation as a share of household income. The event is the first of a series being planned for 2012, building on the themes and momentum generated by CRSC as it works to advance a regional vision, goals, and performance measures for sustainable development. The event is free and open to the public, and organizers invite area leaders from all sectors, as well as anyone interested in regional trends in housing, transportation, economic resilience and sustainability. To find the room for the talk, check the "Today in the Union" (TITU) boards at Union entrances or online (www.union.wisc.edu/titu) the day of the event. The talk will be followed immediately by a mixer outside on the Memorial Union Terrace. In the event of rain, the mixer will be held indoors. In addition to spurring conversation about the long-term impacts of short-term transportation choices, the event is intended to frame and inform projects that are underway to improve the area’s major transportation corridors. Two such projects recently launched by CRSC are a study of the potential for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Madison region, and a parallel Market Study of the potential for infill and redevelopment along transit corridors. The first of two public meetings for the BRT Study is scheduled for September 10, and additional public input will occur during the City of Madison’s Transportation Master Plan process, likely to start this fall. The Madison Area Transportation Planning Board is leading the BRT study, which is expected to be complete early in 2013. Bernstein first presented H+T® Index data for the Madison area at last year’s Capital Region Planning Conference. That data showed that region-wide, households alone spend over $2 billion for the cost of personal transportation, and the impacts of foreclosures and changing gas prices have affected some communities more than others. Archived materials from the 2011 event are available at www.capitalarearpc.org/2011_conference_program.html. CRSC’s educational events are funded through a three-year, $2 million Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secured and led by the CARPC. The grants fund planning and demonstration projects that foster regional collaboration and sustainable, prosperous and resilient communities. Contact: Rachel J. SPJ post-recall forum Red Gym, 716 Langdon St., Madison. MADISON -- What now? Gov. Scott Walker made history by easily surviving a recall election, but the stalemate in Wisconsin will continue as Democrats claim control of the Senate – at least until the next election. Wisconsin has been as polarized as ever in the last 15 months in the wake of momentous changes to public worker collective bargaining engineered by Walker and his Republican legislative colleagues. Now, both Walker and his Democratic opponents pledge cooperation. But how? The Madison pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists seeks to explore whether and how the state can repair its fractious political and social life with a panel discussion featuring former Gov. Tony Earl, a Democrat, former state Rep. Scott Klug, a Republican, and UW-Madison political science professor Katherine Cramer Walsh, who has researched the political, social and cultural lives of Wisconsin residents. The session will be held Thursday, June 21, at 7 pm in the On Wisconsin Room of UW-Madison’s Red Gym, 716 Langdon St. It is free and open to members of the public, who will have an opportunity to comment on what’s next for Wisconsin and to ask panelists questions. Walker, Democratic gubernatorial challenger Tom Barrett, and leaders of the state Legislature will also be invited to attend, and listen. SPJ recommends parking in the City of Madison State Street Campus Ramp, 430 N. Frances St. and 415 N. Lake St. Based in Indianapolis, SPJ is a national membership organization that promotes high professional and ethical standards among journalists, First Amendment principles and the belief that a free and vigorous press is vital in a representative democracy. The Madison professional chapter was formed in 1993. Membership costs $75 annually and is open to journalists who spend at least half of their professional life writing or editing work for publication or to journalism educators. UAW, AFL-CIO mobilization campaign launch UAW Local 9, 9618 W. Greenfield Ave., West Allis. Bring Jobs Home: UAW, AFL-CIO launch mobilization campaign to put America back to work MILWAUKEE – UAW Local 469 members at Master Lock saw a beacon of hope when newly negotiated contract language between the union and company brought jobs back from China last year – something workers would like to see become a trend in American manufacturing. On June 22, the UAW and AFL-CIO affiliates will hold the first of several nationwide events to launch their “America Wants to Work” mobilization campaign at the Master Lock’s flagship factory in Wisconsin, which has been producing iconic padlocks since 1921. The mobilization also focuses on the Bring Jobs Home Act, a legislative package introduced by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., that would eliminate tax breaks allowing companies to deduct expenses associated with moving operations overseas, while still encouraging them to assist displaced workers. It would also provide a tax credit to corporations that bring jobs back to the United States. The bill is expected to be voted on in early July when Congress convenes after the Independence Day recess. “The return of solid, middle-class jobs to Milwaukee was huge for us, especially in this economy,” said Ron McInroy, director of UAW Region 4, which covers Wisconsin. “Master Lock provides a great example of what we can achieve when we work together to invest in America and American workers.” Who: UAW Region 4 Director Ron McInroy UAW Local 469 President Mike Bink Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis. (2nd District), and 2012 U.S. Senate candidate For more information, contact Karen Hickey at 414-573-7579. 2:30 p.m. |

Lt. Gov. Kleefisch, DWD Secretary Newson address training program graduates Richard T. Anderson Education Center, Waukesha County Technical College, 829 Main St., Pewaukee. Secretary Newson to Join Lt. Governor Kleefisch in Saluting Latest Graduates of Training Partnership Addressing Manufacturing Skills Gap MADISON – Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Reggie Newson will join Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch in addressing and congratulating the latest graduates of a new pre-employment training program at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Richard T. Anderson Education Center, Waukesha County Technical College, in Pewaukee. The graduates of a CNC Machinist pre-employment training program are ready for jobs with a Milwaukee metro area employer that has partnered with the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership-BIG STEP, Waukesha County Technical College, and DWD’s regional workforce development partners. Wisconsin’s manufacturing sector is leading the state’s economic recovery, adding jobs under Governor Walker’s leadership.
