Wisconsin AFL-CIO rally Joerns Healthcare plant, 5001 Joerns Drive, Stevens Point. Displaced Joerns Workers Speak Out on Company Outsourcing Jobs to China In media event, displaced workers, community members will detail impact of plant closure on family, Stevens Point community (STEVENS POINT, WI) -- In a few short weeks, over 160 hardworking Steelworkers at Joerns Healthcare will leave their plant for the last time. After years of producing the highest quality hospital furniture in the industry and making millions of dollars in profit for the company, Joerns is closing its doors in order to move production to Mexico. This move will have lasting impacts on the Stevens Point community. One hundred and sixty families will be shattered by trade laws that reward corporate outsourcers. On Monday, July 2 at 5:00 p.m., outside of the Joerns facility, displaced workers will be joined by community members to speak out on the impact this unpatriotic move will have on both their lives and the local economy. The outsourcing of good, Wisconsin jobs highlights the local need for the “Bring Jobs Home Act,” a federal bill which will end incentives for corporations who send jobs overseas and reward employers who keep jobs in the U.S. The U.S. Senate will begin debate on the “Bring Jobs Home Act” following the 4th of July recess. Jay Heck of Common Cause in Wisconsin addresses Milwaukee Rotary Club Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee. In the weeks since the recall election, there has been little talk about what can be done to begin to close the great partisan political divide. In a recent Journal Sentinel op/ed, Jay Heck suggested that Republicans and Democrats begin by passing three political reforms in which there is some bipartisan agreement: reform Wisconsin's recall law; require disclosure of all outside special interest political communications; and reform the redistricting process now. Heck is the state director of the non-partisan political reform advocacy organization, Common Cause in Wisconsin. In his Rotary program, he will elaborate on the difficult but necessary process of bringing bipartisanship back to Wisconsin. 12 p.m. |

Statewide Criminal Justice Coordinating Council listening session UW Milwaukee School of Continuing Education, 7th Floor, Room #7970, 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. The Statewide Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) is hosting a listening session to hear from citizens, justice professionals, and local law enforcement about the criminal justice issues that are important in their communities. Governor Walker established the twenty-member Statewide CJCC by Executive Order in April, and has charged the Council with examining crime and criminal justice problems in the state, and recommending strategies to improve criminal justice system policy, operations, and outcomes. The Council seeks to improve criminal justice system efficiency, effectiveness, and public safety. Wisconsin’s criminal justice system relies on many criminal justice professionals working in multiple agencies at the local, county, and state level. State and local elected officials and agency heads, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and state and local law enforcement share responsibility for the operations of the criminal justice system. Additional non-governmental community members—including victim advocacy and service groups, community treatment providers, and the education community—also play critical roles in the state’s criminal justice system. The Council is interested in hearing perspectives from across the criminal justice system to develop strategies to improve coordination among criminal justice professionals and overall justice system operations. About CJCCs In Wisconsin, 37 local Criminal Justice Coordinating Councils (CJCC)—including a CJCC in Milwaukee—have been established to foster justice system innovations. CJCCs provide the necessary foundation for communities to fully assess the needs of the local criminal justice system and develop programming and practices in response to these needs. An effective CJCC can bring about improvements and new initiatives that cannot be achieved by a single agency or organization (i.e. problem solving courts, utilization of risk assessment tools, community service programs, restorative justice, etc.). 5:30 p.m. |

WCPA, NLEPPGV press conference Concourse Hotel, Caucus Room, 1 W. Dayton St., Madison. WISCONSIN AND NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE TUESDAY IN MADISON TO CALL FOR EXPANDING BACKGROUND CHECKS ON FIREARM PURCHASERS Group Will Meet with Several Wisconsin U.S. Senate Candidates to Discuss Vital Public Safety Concerns (MADISON) The Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association (WCPA) and the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence (NLEPPGV), comprised of major national law enforcement leadership organizations, will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday to announce their call for strengthening background checks on firearm purchasers to ensure that criminals and other prohibited purchasers are prevented from obtaining guns. Prior to the press conference in Madison, the group will meet Monday and Tuesday with candidates for Wisconsin’s highly contested U.S. Senate seat. All candidates from both major parties were invited to participate. Those already scheduled to meet with the group are: Tommy Thompson (R), Jeff Fitzgerald (R) and Eric Hovde (R). The police officials will discuss with candidates key public safety concerns, including expanding the background check requirement for firearm purchasers, improving the quality of background check records systems, and other measures to keep communities and police officers safe. The meetings between law enforcement and the candidates are private. Ground rules stipulate that law enforcement leaders can share their own statements, but not those of the candidates. Candidates can share any part of the discussion. The meetings are nonpartisan and informational only; they will not result in an endorsement of any candidate. The meetings take place following news that in 2011, for the first time in 14 years, firearms claimed more police officers’ lives while on the job than motor vehicles, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Fund. Additionally, gun violence is taking its toll in Wisconsin. In Madison, for example, 80 calls to police reporting shots fired, occurred between March 1 and mid-May. “It is encouraging that so many of Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate candidates are meeting with this state-national law enforcement delegation to discuss vital public safety matters,” said Douglas H. Pettit, chief of police in Oregon, WI, and chair of the law enforcement meeting. “The candidates know that endorsements will not be made, yet they recognize the value of listening to law enforcement leaders while they formulate their policy positions. This law enforcement delegation will impress upon the candidates the urgency and value of strengthening background checks on firearms purchasers to stop criminals and other dangerous people from easily and illegally obtaining firearms.” “Across the nation, law enforcement leaders are united and determined to take steps to reduce violent crime involving firearms,” said Hubert Williams, President of the Police Foundation and Chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of major national law enforcement leadership organizations. “With firearms the number one killer of cops last year, officials must act to keep guns out of the wrong hands. To promote public safety, cops have to be safe on the job, themselves. Police experts can provide lawmakers valuable recommendations on advancing policies that will better protect the public and the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to promote public safety.” SPEAKERS: National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence Chair and Police Foundation President, Hubert Williams Oregon Police Chief and WCPA Legislative Committee Chair, Douglas H. With the nonprofit human services sector at a critical point of renaissance, Dreyfus will explain why the sector is relevant to reducing the number of people who live in poverty, improving the number of people living healthy and safe lives, and increasing the number of people who are on pathways to educational and employment success; thereby building the capacity of communities and representing a wise investment. 12 p.m. |

Sup. Harris, Rep. Mason, Low-Wage Workers to Kick Off “Raise the Minimum Wage” Campaign CONTACT: Janet Veum 414-630-5369 “We can’t survive on $7.25” Sup. Harris, Rep. Mason, Low-Wage Workers to Kick Off “Raise the Minimum Wage” Campaign MILWAUKEE – Fed up with a minimum wage stuck at $7.25 per hour for three years, low-wage workers will be joined by county Sup. Nikiya Harris, state Rep. Cory Mason, and hundreds of other supporters at noon on Tuesday at the North Avenue bridge over I 43 to launch a campaign to raise the minimum wage. Part of a nationwide day of action to focus attention on the plight of low-wage workers and the positive impact a higher minimum wage would have on them and the economy, the rally is the first stop of a bus tour of low-wage workplaces and those with substandard working conditions including Palmero’s Pizza and Dunkin’ Donuts. The current minimum wage amounts to only $15,080 a year for full-time work, almost $9,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of four. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, every $1 hourly wage increase for minimum wage workers results in $2,800 in new consumer spending over the following year, a significant boost to the nation’s economy. The rally marks the start of a fight to raise the minimum wage coordinated by a coalition of individuals and groups including 9to5, We Are Milwaukee, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, SEIU, MICAH, Voces de la Frontera, AFT Local 212, and Wisconsin Jobs Now. Across the nation, over 500,000 people have signed petitions calling for an increase in the minimum wage. Locally, thousands have signed petitions including online at bit.ly/fairShake, which also has more background on the campaign. WHEN: Noon Tuesday, July 24 WHERE: Intersection of 9th Street and North Avenue Milwaukee Low-wage workers, elected officials, and others available for interview. CREDO SuperPAC Medicare anniversary event Office of U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, 208 Grand Ave., Wausau. Seniors Against Duffy to Deliver Medicare Birthday Cake to Rep. Duffy’s Congressional Office on Monday CREDO SuperPAC targeting Rep. Duffy as Part of Grassroots “Take Down the Tea Party Ten” Campaign Wausau, WI- On the 47th anniversary of Medicare, Seniors Against Duffy and CREDO SuperPAC will visit Rep. Sean Duffy’s Congressional office to urge him not to gut Medicare. Local residents will deliver a cake to Rep. Duffy in honor of Medicare's 47th birthday. Rep. Duffy voted for the Paul Ryan budget that would end Medicare as we know it. The cake will read “Happy 47th Birthday! Promise Not To Cut Me With Your Ax!” Seniors Against Duffy is a group of local seniors who will be leading a neighbor-to-neighbor campaign to help spread the message in their communities about Rep. Duffy’s efforts to destroy the social safety net. Instead of spending millions on TV advertising, CREDO SuperPAC’s “Take Down Duffy” campaign has hired four full time organizers, opened a field office in Manchester, and is partnering with local constituents in Rep. Duffy’s district to mobilize voters and spread the word about the radical policies championed by Rep. Duffy. For more information about Sunday’s event, please contact Emily Reinhardt at 715-297-3725 or via email at Emily.Reinhardt@credosuperpac.com 3:30 p.m. |
