Fitchburg Community Center, 5510 Lacy Road, Fitchburg. PROFS TO HOST FORUM FEATURING 47th ASSEMBLY DISTRICT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES Madison – PROFS, the Public Representation Organization of the Faculty Senate, will host a forum of Democratic candidates in the race for the 47th Assembly District. The forum, which is open to the public, will be held at 7 pm, Wednesday, August 1 at the Fitchburg Community Center, 5510 Lacy Road, Fitchburg. Redistricting has resulted in a newly-drawn 47th Assembly District that now includes parts of Fitchburg, Monona, and McFarland. The Democratic primary features Amanda Hall, a recent law school graduate and Robb Kahl, an attorney and former mayor of Monona. “PROFS is excited to sponsor this important candidate forum,” says Bill Tracy, president of PROFS and professor of agronomy. “Many faculty and staff live in this district, and university issues affect the entire region. This forum is a great opportunity to learn more about each candidate’s views on the issues, including those facing UW-Madison.” Political Science professor Ken Mayer will moderate the forum, and audience members will be able to contribute questions at the event. Visitors to the PROFS website (www.profs.wisc.edu) may also leave questions in the comment section of this post. The top vote-getter will face Republican Sandy Bakk of McFarland in November. PROFS plans to offer a second forum with the general election contenders in October. PROFS is a non-profit membership organization that represents the interests of the UW-Madison faculty before the Wisconsin Legislature, state officials, federal officials, and the general public. State Capitol. Thousands of Aspiring Americans Across the U.S. Begin to “Own the Dream;" Begin Applying for Deferred Action & Work Permits in Wake of Historic Decision by DHS Dreamers Unite! Thank you Obama & the Struggle Continues. A Day of Action, featuring DREAMers presenting the first applications for submission under the new deferred action guidelines to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), and sharing their stories of how meaningful this action by the Department of Homeland Security is for their dreams to reach their fullest potential as aspiring Americans with local media. This past June, President Obama announced that hundreds of thousands of undocumented young people known as "DREAMers" can apply for work permits and protection from deportation. Popularly known as "deferred action", this new initiative allows them to defer deportation and obtain work permits. This is an important step but will only reach final resolution of the DREAMers’ status through passage of the DREAM Act by Congress. MADISON, WISCONSIN - This coming Wednesday, August 15, thousands of young aspiring Americans known as “DREAMers” will begin the process of applying for work permits and protection from deportation, known as "deferred action." On Wednesday, United We Dream is holding a Day of Action across America to celebrate this historic landmark and to advocate for a truly permanent solution to this issue. United We Dream, a network of youth-led organizations across the country, is leading an unprecedented and massive national campaign offering assistance to a significant number of the hundreds of thousands of DREAMers eligible for this opportunity to stay in America so they can complete their education and contribute to the economy. In addition, United We Dream is committed to continue the work that needs to be done to make this process better. Across the U.S., DREAMers will present the first applications for submission under the new guidelines to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). In Madison, local members of United We DREAM will launch a local application campaign that equips DREAMers with tools to properly execute these applications. The campaign will join the resources of United We Dream and its partners to offer assistance to a significant number of the hundreds of thousands of DREAMers eligible for this opportunity to stay in America to complete their education and contribute to the economy. The campaign launches Wednesday with a press event featuring DREAMers eligible for deferred action. At this press event, DREAMers will share their stories of how meaningful this action by the Department of Homeland Security is for their dreams to reach their fullest potential as aspiring Americans. With: Aspiring Americans in Madison who aim to “Own the Dream” and the Voces de la Frontera/Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES). U.S. Rep. Ryan’s Congressional Office, 20 Main St., Janesville. WISCONSINITES TO RALLY AGAINST MITT ROMNEY AND PAUL RYAN’S DANGEROUS AGENDA--“TOO EXTREME FOR AMERICA” JANESVILLE, WI – With Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, and his newly-minted Vice Presidential Running Mate, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, crossing the country to spread their millionaire-endorsed Right-Wing agenda for America; average Wisconsinites gather Thursday to say “not so fast.” A coalition of Wisconsin activists and his own constituents will gather Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Ryan’s Janesville Congressional Office at 20 Main Street, 4PM, to tell Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan that their harmful extremist Right-Wing political agenda is “Too Extreme for America.” From their position on women’s health, opposition to equality for all, plans to privatize Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; and endorsement of anti-worker corporate policies and tax giveaways to millionaires and billionaires; Ryan & Romney have proven in word and deed that they will push for the extreme Right-Wing at every turn. · WNPJ presents "Reducing the Prison Population: What works?"
411 South, State Capitol. The 11x15 Campaign for Safer, Healthier Communities presents Reducing the Prison Population: What works? Featuring Ms. Nicole Porter of the Sentencing Project The highly respected Sentencing Project of Washington D.C. is "dedicated to changing the way Americans think about crime and punishment." Our guest speaker, Ms. Porter, is their coordinator of state legislative and public education campaigns. Join us to: Learn the various steps that other states (with support from both political parties) have taken in order to reduce their prison populations. Discuss the ways Wisconsin might be able to adopt some of the best practices from around the country. Envision a greatly reduced prison population in Wisconsin that makes us safer and healthier while saving taxpayer dollars. All are welcome to this free event. The Madison 11x15 campaign is organized by MOSES, the Madison affiliate of the WISDOM network of 125 Wisconsin congregations of all denominations. The campaign is supported by the Wisconsin Council of Churches, Voices Beyond Bars, Prison Ministry Project, Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice, Madison-area Urban Ministry, Nehemiah Community Development Corporation, and the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice. Wisconsin is one of the worst states for over-incarceration, especially of people of color. Though only six percent of state residents are African-American, more than half of Wisconsin's prison population is African-American. Our prison population per capita is more than double that of Minnesota's, even though the two states have similar demographics overall. Wisconsin's corrections budget is also more than twice that of Minnesota's. Yet the $1.3 billion that Wisconsin spent on its prison system in 2011 hasn't reduced crimes rates here, relative to Minnesota. On the positive side, there are already many successful programs in Wisconsin that provide alternatives to incarceration. These include drug treatment courts, day reporting centers and special programs for offenders with mental illness problems. Unfortunately, these effective programs barely survive on minimal budgets and volunteered time from judges – even as the prison budget has grown from $200 million to $1.3 billion since 1990. Simply investing more in alternatives to incarceration would save money overall while healing our communities. The outrageous growth of the Wisconsin prison system happened under the leadership of both major political parties. In other states, both Democrats and Republicans have led meaningful prison reform efforts. People of faith and good will call on members of both political parties to recognize that over-incarceration is not a partisan issue; it is a matter of morality, common sense, fairness and fiscal responsibility. · Campaign kickoff for Cancer Votes 2012
State St. steps, State Capitol. Wisconsin Cancer Patients & Survivors: Make Cancer an Election Issue! Survivors, caregivers and family members take action in U.S. Senate race Madison, Wis. — Each day 87 people in Wisconsin are diagnosed with cancer yet none of the candidates for U.S. Senate are talking about the critical role our government plays in beating the disease. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) aims to change that through its 2012 Cancer Votes campaign. Through a series of grassroots activities, media events and one-on-one candidate contacts, Cancer Votes will empower cancer patients, survivors and their families to put faces, names and stories behind the numbers. “Considering almost half of all Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, this is a ‘special interest group’ in which almost everyone is a member,” said Allison Miller, Wisconsin Government Relations Director for ACS CAN. “People touched by cancer need to know what candidates think about issues like cancer research funding and access to health care and candidates need to know that winning the election is just the first step to helping us win the war against this disease.” Dozens of Cancer Votes volunteers will gather to kick off their campaign with a press event, Wednesday, Aug. 22nd at 12 noon, during which the group will pose 87 different life-size cutouts around the Capitol lawn, one for each person diagnosed each day in the state. With: Kathi Hansen—Emcee breast cancer survivor, Hansen’s breast cancer was detected thanks to access to a timely and insurance-covered mammogram. Dr. Mark Berkard—Cancer researcher and medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of breast cancer at the Wisconsin Institute of Medical Research, Dr. Berkard will speak about the role federal cancer research funding plays in the continued fight against the disease here in Wisconsin. Mallory Davidson—Davidson’s brother, Ryan, died at age 16 after a ten year fight with brain cancer. She will speak about what cancer research meant to Ryan and their family and how important federal funding is to families fighting cancer in our state. Tim & Mary Gorton—Parents of childhood leukemia survivor, the Gortons will speak about the end of pre-existing condition exclusions for kids under the health reform law. 12 p.m.

He is currently touring the Midwest as a Move to Amend national spokesperson, inspiring confidence that we can actually build a multiracial, cross-class democracy movement, to again establish a government of, by, and for the People. This event is free and open to the general public, donations requested, no one turned away for lack of funds. 7 p.m.

Dunkin’ Donuts, 701 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. Send-off rally set for Friday . . . Local Low-Wage Workers Heading to Tampa for RNC Joining hundreds to speak out against a Romney economy MILWAUKEE – Friends, neighbors, and other supporters will gather at 11 am on Friday to send off three low-wage workers going to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, where the GOP will officially name Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to their ticket. The three will join people from throughout the county to speak out for the 99% about the harm caused by plans to raise their taxes and cut vital services to fund tax breaks for the richest 1%. Hundreds will gather in Tampa for peaceful protests to tell their personal stories and to take a stand against policies that would mean more tax breaks for the rich, more American jobs being outsourced to China, and more budget cuts on the backs of working families and their communities. “We’re going to represent the 99% at the convention of the 1%,” said Cody Misiak, who will make the trip to Tampa and plans to speak out about raising the minimum wage. “They don’t even think about people like me who can’t survive on $7.25.” In Wisconsin, low-wage workers from the Wausau and Green Bay areas also will be going to Tampa. · Wisconsin Grandsons of Liberty, Wisconsin Conservative Digest Chicken Burn
Dohnal Household, 11324 W. Potter Road, Wauwatosa. This is not a fundraiser, but an educational forum. Featured guest speaker Tommy Thompson. Wisconsin's Most successful governor, Tommy Thompson, is launching his campaign at the 42nd Annual Chicken Burn on Sunday Aug. 26, at the Dohnal household. During Tommy's tenure Wisconsin had the most prosperous time in our history, created the most jobs and made sure that this state kept at the forefront of this country in education, taxes, economy, sporting programs and most other areas. Tommys has been wildly popular. Tommy is determined to be the 51st vote in the US Senate and help solve the problems of War, Economy, Jobs and Obamacare. Tommys has unique talents in the area of healthcare and his expertise will lead to the termination of Obamacare and the saving of programs like Social Security and Medicare. The Medicaid program has threatened to bankrupt the USA and the states. It must be reformed. We invite everyone to come, bring a small donation or a dish to pass. Many people have asked me why I, a dedicated Conservative and publisher of the Wisconsin Conservative Digest is backing Tommy? The answer is simple. Tommy, along with about two dozen others and myself were all inspired by the Goldwater candidacy and his Conservative books to take part in the political theater. Above all, Tommy is a problem solver, he was at the state level and his is the most qualified person to go and solve these difficult problems at the federal level. His opponent does not have a record of soling much of anything and is know for pushing an agenda foreign to the needs of the people of this state. Join us and volunteer to help the campaign. 1 p.m.

WI Stimulus and Jobs Forum Shows Progress Webinar Shows What the Stimulus Jobs Bill Did for Clean Energy and Jobs Madison--With Wisconsin struggling with the worst jobs record in the nation, job creators, citizens and leaders will meet Wednesday to participate in a national webinar, “Looking Back on the Stimulus: What did it mean for the US? What did it mean for clean energy?” sponsored by the Vote Solar Initiative. “Wisconsin lost 6,500 jobs last month and according to DWD, 26,946 total jobs in Wisconsin were lost since December 2010, when Walker took office. We need to understand how the Stimulus jobs bill helped create jobs and how these extreme state and national budget cuts we will soon be faced with will hurt jobs,” said State Rep. Brett Hulsey, D-Madison, member of the Assembly Energy and Natural Resources Committees. “Sadly, Governor Walker has chosen to slash clean energy investments that led to job losses.” After the webinar, Wisconsin businesses in renewable and other energy sources will respond. The Recovery and Reinvestment Act invested more than $4 billion in Wisconsin, creating almost 2,000 jobs in the second quarter of this year. Governor Walker turned back $1.3 billion for healthcare, job training, internet upgrade and construction to other states costing more than 5,500 jobs. Contact: Rep.
