SUMMARY:Milwaukee Rotary Club
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee County Was Memorial Center\,750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive\,Milwaukee. \n\n\n\nFuturist David Zach is to present\, “The Fog of Progress: Finding Clarity and Connection in Uncertain Times.” \n\n\n\nForecasts are a dime-a-dozen these days\, each one presented as more vital and transformative\, yet also more seductive and distracting. All together\, they surround you in a fog of progress. This talk is on how to look into and through the fog\, using a set of tools to help put the forecasts (and Futurists) into a more practical perspective – and it all begins by learning to be more curious again… \n\n\n\nDavid Zach is a Futurist. No\, really. He has a master’s in Futures Research from the University of Houston. Then again\, he got that degree way back in 1981\, so it’s pretty much history at this point. He’s given over 1500 talks throughout North America and Europe on the interconnections between curiosity\, art and design\, screens and books\, automation and craft\, change and continuity. And pirates. He likes to talk about pirates and their curious role in figuring out how the future really works. For more: www.davidzach.com \n\n\n\nRotary meetings are open to members\, invited guests and media. \n\n\n\nFor more information: http://milwaukeerotary.com/event/david-zach-futurist/

SUMMARY:Milwaukee Rotary Club
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee County War Memorial Center\,750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive\,Milwaukee. \n\n\n\nGuest speaker is Rob Henken\, president of the Wisconsin Policy Forum. \n\n\n\nMilwaukee’s city and county government leaders have been pushing hard for the legal authority to ask voters to approve a 1% county sales tax to address their worsening fiscal challenges. Rotarian Rob Henken\, President of the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum\, will discuss the factors that have created these challenges and why the two governments fear they’re near a breaking point. He’ll also touch on the potential consequences if no action is taken\, as well as other steps the two governments might take to improve their fiscal outlooks. \n\n\n\nRotary meetings are open to members\, invited guests and media. \n\n\n\nFor more information: http://milwaukeerotary.com/event/rob-henken-president-of-the-wisconsin-policy-forum/

SUMMARY:Wisconsin Energy Institute forum on links between energy\, disability and climate justice
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Energy Institute will bring together a panel of experts on Jan. 31 to explore ways that climate change disproportionately affects people with disabilities.   \n\n\n\nAs storms fueled by climate change surge and aging infrastructure leads to more frequent power outages\, disabled people face disproportionate risk to the impacts of climate change. At the same time\, people with disabilities spend a higher percentage of their income on energy than non-disabled people\, exposing intersecting systemic injustices. \n\n\n\nIn this time of adaptation and transformation\, the disability community holds immense wisdom on living in\, and with\, change.  \n\n\n\nThe free event will be moderated by Mari Magler\, director of the McBurney Disability Resource Center at UW–Madison\, and will take place both in person at the Wisconsin Energy Institute (1552 University Ave\, Madison) and online via Zoom Webinar. \n\n\n\nWhat: Energy\, Disability and Climate Justice forum \n\n\n\nWhen: Jan. 31\, 4:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: Wisconsin Energy Institute\, 1552 University Ave.\, Madison; and online via Zoom \n\n\n\nRegister: go.wisc.edu/disability-forum \n\n\n\nContact Allison Bender with questions about the event or logistics. SUMMARY:Marquette University Mitchem Fellow lecture on Black education spaces with Blake O'Neal Turner
DESCRIPTION:MILWAUKEE — Blake O’Neal Turner\, mathematics educator and Marquette University’s 2022-23 Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellow\, will present “Black Education Spaces: Black Liberatory Mathematics in the Margins\,” the 2023 Mitchem Fellow Lecture on Tuesday\, Jan. 31\, at 4:30 p.m. at Raynor Memorial Libraries. \n\n\n\nThis lecture\, sponsored by the College of Education and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion\, explores how two groups of educational stakeholders rarely consulted for their expertise – Black women mathematics teachers and early career Black mathematics scholars – are leveraging Black educational spaces to advance mathematics education practice and research toward liberation for Black learners. The activism of these two groups grappling with the possibilities of liberation demonstrates the promises and pitfalls of racial affinity groups in transforming the education enterprise broadly\, and mathematics education specifically. \n\n\n\nThe lecture is free and open to the public. Media interested in attending the lecture should contact Kevin Conway\, associate director of university communication\, at kevin.m.conway@marquette.edu. \n\n\n\nTurner is a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland\, where she was selected for the 2022 Outstanding Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award\, studying urban education with a concentration in mathematics education. She aims to continue to leverage her service as an educator\, researcher and social justice advocate to build the capacity of teachers\, teacher educators\, and scholars to enact anti-racist and equitable pedagogies in the classroom and use research to expose and dismantle anti-blackness in education broadly\, mathematics education specifically. Broadly\, Turner’s research attends to the ways that mathematics education is an instantiation of an anti-black and white institutional space and how critical research methodologies\, and theoretical frameworks can be used as a tool towards liberation for minoritized and marginalized communities\, but particularly Black doers\, learners\, and teachers of mathematics. \n\n\n\nTurner graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s in teaching secondary mathematics and special education. She also holds a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in measurement\, evaluation\, statistics and assessment. \n\n\n\nThe Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellowship Program is intended to increase the presence of underrepresented ethnic groups by supporting doctoral candidates in completing their final academic requirement\, the dissertation. The fellow will be in residence at Marquette for an academic year\, during which the recipient will teach one course in his or her area of specialization while completing his or her dissertation. The recipient will also participate in a formal mentoring program. The Mitchem Fellowship is named in honor of Dr. Arnold L. Mitchem\, who earned his doctorate from Marquette in 1981 and is an internationally recognized champion of educational opportunity. Mitchem founded Marquette’s Educational Opportunity Program and served as its director from 1969 to 1986.
