SUMMARY:Free webinar on Japan-Wisconsin ties
DESCRIPTION:With Badger State roots dating back nearly 50 years\, Japanese companies are steady business partners with many Wisconsin firms and often invest in the state. Is that relationship evolving – and how can it enhance economic security within a region high on Wisconsin’s trade and investment list? \n\n\n\nJoin us noon Central Time Wednesday\, Nov. 16\, for the latest in a series of free webinars on Wisconsin and trade produced by WisBusiness.com\, WisPolitics.com and the Wisconsin Technology Council. The groups launched a joint Trade Policy Initiative in the spring of 2021. \n\n\n\n“Japan and Wisconsin: Quiet partners in a turbulent world” will feature a panel discussion among executives who conduct trans-Pacific business on a regular basis or who are gearing up to do so. Guests for the hour-long seminar will represents Kikkoman Foods\, Promega Corp.\, Great Dane Brew Pub and FUJIFILM-CDI. \n\n\n\nJapan was Wisconsin’s seventh-largest trading partner in 2021 at nearly $700 million\, more than one-third of China’s $1.8 billion total for the same year. That was true even though Japan’s population is less than 10% of China’s 1.4 billion people. \n\n\n\nDirect investment by Japan in Wisconsin has grown steadily over time\, about $2.4 billion since 2014 alone\, and its stands as the state’s biggest foreign investor. The same is true across the United States\, where Japan ranks first in 36 states for foreign direct investment and in the top three in the rest. \n\n\n\nJapanese-owned companies also rank first among international sources in creating American manufacturing jobs and first in total research and development spending in the United States. Tech Council President Tom Still will moderate; Jeff Mayers of WisBusiness.com will host. \n\n\n\nSee more on the Trade Policy Initiative\, sponsored by Michael Best Strategies: www.wisbusiness.com/trade-policy/

SUMMARY:League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County climate change public issues forum
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee — The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County is presenting a public issues forum titled “Climate Change: Origins\, Impacts\, Solutions” on November 16\, 2022\, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Summit Place\, 6737 W. Washington St.\, West Allis. The event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will include an overview of the impacts of rising global temperatures\, as well as local actions that can combat the effects of climate change close to home. The program’s presenter is David H. Petering\, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry\, Emeritus\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n\n\n\n“As part of our advocacy in the public interest\, the League of Women Voters has long supported measures to address climate change\,” said League President Peggy Creer. “By advocating for the Milwaukee City-County Climate and Economic Equity Plan\, Milwaukee residents can act locally to protect public health and defend the global ecosystem.”  \n\n\n\nClimate change presents an existential threat to the future of life on Earth.  The presentation will discuss the origins of climate change within the context of Earth as a life-sustaining planet\, followed by an overview of the impacts of rising global temperatures across the globe. The focus will then shift to technical solutions that have the potential to transform the world’s economies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.  Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan will be highlighted to illustrate the promise and the challenges of this far-reaching objective — and whether technological fixes can be implemented in time and at the scale necessary in the USA without a drastic change in our collective values.
