SUMMARY:Douglas County Silhouette Event
DESCRIPTION: Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin\, in partnership with Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf\, is raising awareness about the rights available to crime victims in Wisconsin through a compelling display of silhouettes at the Douglas County Courthouse. The display is available to view from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday\, Sept. 17. \n\n\n\nAttendees will encounter an interactive showcase of red-painted silhouettes symbolizing individuals affected by crime. Each silhouette will feature one of the rights granted by Wisconsin’s Crime Victims’ Rights constitutional amendment\, also known as Marsy’s Law. Additionally\, the silhouettes will be equipped with QR codes linking individuals to the websites for Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin\, local victim service provider the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse (CASDA)\, and the Wisconsin Office of Crime Victims’ Services for further information. \n\n\n\nNela Kalpic\, State Director of Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin\, stated\, “The silhouette exhibit sheds light on the experiences of crime victims and survivors – often our neighbors\, coworkers\, or acquaintances. Through this display\, we hope to raise awareness about the rights protected under Marsy’s Law and the support services offered by the District Attorney’s office and providers like the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse.” \n\n\n\n“As the Douglas County District Attorney\, my team and I are committed to ensuring crime victims receive the dignity they deserve\, which our state constitution requires\,” said Mark Fruehauf\, the district attorney of Douglas County. “The silhouette display aims to educate the public about their rights under Marsy’s Law and the victim services our office and community can provide to people facing a difficult time.” \n\n\n\nThe silhouettes will be placed inside the Douglas County Courthouse. Each silhouette will display a specific right from Marsy’s Law\, written in language easily understood by victims who may not have prior engagement with the criminal justice system. Marsy’s Law rights highlighted on the silhouettes include: right to privacy\, right to notice\, right to confer\, right to be present\, right to be heard\, right to know your rights\, right to restitution\, and right to enforce your rights. \n\n\n\nThe event begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday\, Sept. 17 inside the Douglas County Courthouse located at 1313 Belknap St\, Superior. The silhouettes will remain in the Courthouse until that afternoon at 4 p.m..

SUMMARY:Free Speech Forum
DESCRIPTION:Free Speech for Campus\, Inc. (FSFC)\, The Wisconsin Association of Scholars (WAS)\, and the Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue (WICCD) will hold a forum on the subject of freedom of expression at Wisconsin universities on Friday\, September 20\, 2024 at 12:00 noon in Room 412 East of the Wisconsin State Capitol.  \n\n\n\nUniversities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman will be the keynote speaker at the event.  He will discuss the current state of free speech at UW institutions and efforts to expand free speech and civil discourse.  \n\n\n\nUpon becoming president of the Universities of Wisconsin\, Rothman prioritized free speech at UW institutions.  He has since implemented a ban on the use of DEI statements in the Universities of Wisconsin hiring process.  In late 2022\, he approved a statewide student survey on free speech.  The survey of more than 10\,000 students was conducted by Dr. Tim Shiell\, a professor emeritus at UW-Stout and Director of the Menard Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation. \n\n\n\nRothman also created the Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue (WICCD)\, an entity of the Universities of Wisconsin system\, that provides resources\, opportunities\, and support for teaching\, learning\, and practicing viewpoint diversity; freedom of expression; academic freedom; civil dialogue; and civic participation within our universities and communities. \n\n\n\nState Representative Dave Murphy\, Chairperson of the State Assembly’s Colleges and Universities Committee\, will host a panel discussion on the legal framework for protecting academic freedom and freedom of expression.

SUMMARY:WISDOM Day of Action to End Solitary Confinement
DESCRIPTION:[Milwaukee\, WI] – On any given day in the U.S.\, an estimated 122\,000 adults are held for 23 hours a day for months\, years\, even decades in solitary confinement in prisons and jails\, with many more held in solitary in youth and immigrant detention centers.  \n\n\n\nWISDOM leaders are holding a day of action on September 23rd at 11 am in front of Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF) at 1015 N. 10th St. Milwaukee\, WI 53233 to stand in solidarity with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture’s Together to End Solitary Campaign that raises attention on the 23rd of each month.  \n\n\n\nDirectly impacted leaders and religious leaders will call for an end to the torture of solitary confinement. They will also emphasize the urgent need to completely depopulate Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility and close the state’s two oldest prisons in Waupun and Green Bay.  \n\n\n\nWISDOM will also be kicking off something new this month. There will be a meet up for a quick pre-action meeting by Zoom on the evening before the 23rd. We’ll offer prayers on behalf of those detained in solitary confinement. Testimonies from those who have survived solitary confinement will be presented. We will also be informed about the events scheduled for the next day. These meetings should only take up to twenty minutes. We invite you to the first thoughts\, which will take place this Sunday\, September 22\, at 5:30 pm.  \n\n\n\nRegister in advance at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYodu2prjkoGtdH_OxVjwIJb71X_q14i4mp.
