The conservative Heritage Action for American announced today it’s launching an in-person grassroots campaign in four states, including Wisconsin.
The effort began yesterday with canvassers starting to knock on 200,000 doors in Wisconsin, Iowa, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
It’s one of the first national groups to announce plans to return to in-person canvassing in Wisconsin amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The group said it is taking safety precautions such as social distancing, hand-sanitizing and moving the elderly to call-only lists.
In a memo about its Wisconsin efforts, Heritage Action said in January it developed a model to identify persuadable swing voters and then conducted focus groups in February
The group plans to focus on Washington, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties in the southeastern corner of the state. The WOW counties have been traditional GOP strongholds where Republicans’ margins have dropped in the last two cycles compared to historical marks. Meanwhile, Racine has been trending Republican and Kenosha is a swing county.
A Heritage spokesman said the five counties have a high concentration of swing voters it believes can be persuaded this fall. Combined with their proximity to each other, it “made good practical sense for a door-to-door campaign.”
The overall effort has a short-term goal of turning out the vote in November with an eye toward building a more permanent conservative infrastructure in the targeted states.
