State Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, formally rolled out his bid for U.S. Senate today, calling on Wisconsinites to join him in “standing up to the bullies in Washington and Wall Street.”

In a video posted to social media, Larson ripped what he said is a system rigged through money, gerrymandering and disinformation. He also knocked U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson as one of the richest members of the Senate, saying the Oshkosh Republican has spent his career benefiting himself “at the expense of the rest of us.”

“We can unrig that system and finally achieve those things we fought for like Medicare for all, the Green New Deal, ensuring the super rich pay their fair share,” Larson says in the video.

Larson, 40, was a Milwaukee County supervisor when he knocked off Sen. Jeff Plale in the 2010 Dem Senate primary and went on to win the seat. He then ran unsuccessfully for Milwaukee County exec in 2016 and 2020.

If Larson stays in the race, he’d have to give up his solidly Dem state Senate seat.

So far, Wausau radiologist Gillian Battino, state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, former Milwaukee Bucks exec Alex Lasry and Outagamie County Exec Tom Nelson have all formally announced plans to run for the Senate seat. Steven Olikara, who co-founded the Millennial Action Project, announced yesterday he had formed an exploratory committee to consider a run.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes has also been considering a bid.

Johnson hasn’t announced yet whether he will seek a third term next fall.
