Dem 3rd CD candidate Brad Pfaff released new polling showing him trailing GOP rival Republican Derrick Van Orden by 5 points.

The poll, conducted by the Dem firm Public Policy Polling, found 45 percent of registered voters in the district polled supported Van Orden, a former Navy SEAL who ran in 2020, while 40 percent backed Pfaff, a state senator and former state ag secretary from Onalaska.

Pfaff released the poll days after the GOP-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund, which has run ads backing Van Orden, found the GOP nominee leading 50.3 percent to 37.5 among likely voters.

The PPP poll found 34 percent of those surveyed had a positive opinion of Van Orden, while 32 percent didn’t. Another 33 percent didn’t have an opinion of him.

Meanwhile, 27 percent viewed Pfaff favorably, while 28 percent didn’t and 45 percent offering no opinion.

The poll of 626 3rd CD voters was conducted from Aug. 18-19 with half of the interviews over text message and half over the phone. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.9 percent.

FiveThirtyEight gives Public Policy Polling an A-minus rating.
