State GOP files lawsuit to halt privately funded GOTV effort in Milwaukee

The state GOP has filed a new lawsuit seeking to shut down a privately funded effort to turn out voters in Milwaukee, arguing involvement by city officials violates state law.

The suit seeks a finding that Milwaukee Votes 2022 and the city's involvement in promoting it violates Wisconsin law. It also seeks an order permanently enjoining the initiative or any similar effort.

Jeff Fleming, a spokesman for Mayor Cavalier Johnson, said nothing was done that violated the law and "absolutely no work has taken place from the Mayor’s office that supported candidates or political parties."
