Former Gov. Tommy Thompson on Wednesday came to the defense of Vos after Trump called the Assembly speaker a “RINO” and endorsed his primary opponent.

Scott Walker also backed Vos following Trump’s comments.

Thompson, who appointed Vos to the UW Board of Regents while he was a student at UW-Whitewater, said in a statement today: “No one could ever doubt that Robin is a conservative Republican.

“He’s a powerful check on the woke liberal agenda. He’s smart. He’s a listener. He’s an extraordinary leader,” Thompson said. “I’ve always been able to count on him and I know the people in his district can, too.”

Thompson flirted with a bid for guv earlier this year and traveled to Florida to meet with Trump about the race. After opting against a bid of his own, he later endorsed Michels, who’s also supported by Trump.

Walker tweeted, “Arguably, no one has done more to block the radical agenda of Gov. Tony Evers than Speaker Robin Vos. When I was Governor, there was no greater advocate in the Legislature for our conservative reforms.”
