Assembly Speaker Robin Vos isn’t backing off his refusal to try overturning the 2020 election results after former President Trump endorsed his primary opponent.
The Rochester Republican said in a statement late yesterday, “As a conservative, I believe in upholding the constitution. That’s why I won’t take the impossible step to overturn the 2020 election.”
Trump has repeatedly called for Wisconsin Republicans to decertify the 2020 election results despite numerous legal opinions that it isn’t possible.
After pressing Vos on the issue several times — and teasing he might endorse his primary opponent — Trump late yesterday gave his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of Adam Steen, a self-employed investor living in Sturtevant. The primary is Tuesday.
In the statement, Trump knocked Vos as a “RINO,” said he has blocked efforts to conduct a full cyber forensic audit of the 2020 election, and hasn’t acted on issues raised by former Justice Michael Gableman’s findings. He also charged Vos has tried to mislead voters into believing he supports the longtime incumbent.
“Adam Steen, on the other hand, is a motivated Patriot, dedicated to making Wisconsin Great Again,” Trump said. “He has had the courage to stand up strongly against ‘Speaker’ Vos. Adam will bravely serve the people of Wisconsin, and bring with him strength, wisdom, and a new patriotism.”
Vos said in response the endorsement “changes nothing” because all that matters is the view of Racine County voters.
Independent groups have reported spending $117,277 supporting Vos through mail, online ads and robocalls with another $30,000 on mail opposing Steen, according to a check of a state database.
No independent expenditures have been reported to the state supporting Steen or opposing Vos.
Meanwhile, the speaker has outraised Steen $120,576 to $65,558 since the start of the year.
“I will continue to knock on doors and discuss the issues they care about,” Vos said. “Instead of focusing on the past, they are focused on the future goals of improving election integrity, fighting inflation by reducing our tax burden and supporting police who will enforce tough-on-crime policies.”
