Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez announced her new PAC will focus on staving off a Republican supermajority while also electing Dems focused on health care.
The Brookfield Dem in a phone interview told WisPolitics the project will not be used to fund her reelection. Treasurer Barbara Notestein, a former Milwaukee Dem Assembly member, will run the PAC with the goal of supporting incumbents and others campaigning on health care issues in 2024 and beyond.
Rodriguez said later in the campaign season the PAC will look at backing more than just incumbents, and help those with health care backgrounds and candidates who champion health care initiatives she supports, such as expanding BadgerCare.
Rodriguez also said protecting Gov. Tony Evers’ veto power is another essential goal as Republicans eye up an Assembly supermajority after winning two-thirds of the Senate.
“And we are only short two seats within the Assembly,” she said. “We need to protect Governor Evers’ veto. And so we want to make sure that we are competing in every place that we can compete as Democrats.”
With new legislative maps potentially coming before the next election, Rodriguez said it’s hard to say now which GOP districts they’re going to rally the troops against, but Dems need to be ready for whatever the future holds.
The PAC will also focus on historically underrepresented groups, such as Latino voters.
