Racine County Emergency Management Coordinator Lorenzo Santos is now the second Dem challenger to U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil in southeastern Wisconsin next year.
Santos, a Navy Reserve intelligence officer who also chairs the Young Democrats of Wisconsin, in a statement Monday said he will focus on reproductive rights, health care, voting rights and worker’s rights, among other issues. He is also a Truman National Security Project Defense Council member and graduated with a master’s in homeland security from George Washington University.
“I’m running because we’ve seen fundamental civil and human rights systematically taken away these past few years and I’m not going to stand by and let that continue to happen,” Santos said.
Caledonia Village Board Trustee Anthony Hammes has also filed to run for the 1st CD seat.
Hammes, a digital marketing specialist, on his campaign website says he wants to make health care affordable and accessible, reduce hate crimes and gun violence, give women the right to make their own health care decisions and protect Social Security, among other things.
“I believe in equal rights for all,” he wrote on his site. “Women must have the right to choose what’s best for their healthcare needs. We must do more to combat climate change, economic stability and support our public schools.”
A Dem source said others considering a run include former Racine Police Chief Art Howell and Ryan Schroeder, the mayor of Delavan and a former legislative aide.
Steil won reelection by nearly 10 points in 2022 as he faced underfunded attorney Ann Roe, of Janesville. He reported nearly $2.9 million in the bank at the end of June and is seeking his fourth term next fall.
