CHICAGO – Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski offers a reminder to anyone who may be feeling really excited about Dem prospects this fall.

“We only know close elections in Wisconsin, and it doesn’t matter how popular you are or how unpopular you are, it’s going to be close,” Godlewski said in a WisPolitics-WisconsinEye interview from the DNC. “And so the one thing that we know is that you can’t take your foot off the gas in our state. So how do you do that? You got to meet folks where they are. And that’s what I think has been so inspiring about this campaign, is that they’re not just spending time in Madison. They are reaching out across the state.”

The Eau Claire native pointed to the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz rally in western Wisconsin: “I mean, their second visit was in western Wisconsin, and we were seeing a turnout that was larger than Country Jam or Rockfest.”

Another difference-maker is Walz, the Minnesota governor and vice presidential candidate.

“What I love about Tim Walz is that he is our Minnesota neighbor, and he is bleeding that through and through,” Godlewski said. “You have a former high school teacher and football coach. We all know those people. They’re the ones that we’re calling when we can’t get out of our driveway …to help shovel us out.”

She added: “It’s not about him, and I think it couldn’t be a better contrast against JD Vance, who’s just focused on himself.”
