Gov. Tony Evers has announced a July special election to fill the vacant 4th SD and one in November for the 8th CD.

The 4th SD has been open since January, when then-state Sen. Lena Taylor, D-Milwaukee, resigned following her appointment to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

The election will be July 30 with a primary, if necessary, on July 2.

Already, state Reps. Dora Drake and LaKeshia Myers, both Milwaukee Dems, have said they plan to run.

The executive order Evers signed specifies the election will be held under the new map he approved earlier this year. The state Supreme Court in its ruling throwing out the lines from the 2022 election barred their use going forward, while the new maps include a provision that they don’t take effect until the fall elections. The state Supreme Court declined an earlier request to specify which maps should be used in the interim.

The special election in the 8th CD will be held concurrently with the November election with an Aug. 13 primary. So far, state Sen. André Jacque, former state Sen. Roger Roth and businessman Tony Wied have announced plans to seek the GOP nomination to replace Mike Gallagher, who resigned this spring. Dr. Kristin Lyerly has announced plans to run as a Dem.
