The group seeking to recall Robin Vos asked a Dane County Court for more time to respond to the challenge filed by the GOP Assembly speaker, who wants the effort dismissed.

Recall proponents faced a deadline Tuesday to respond to Vos’ challenge. But the petition argues they can’t answer his allegations until they know which district lines should be in place for the recall.

They want a delay until five days after the state Supreme Court rules on pending motions seeking an answer to that question.

Vos’ challenge, filed last week, argued the recall petition is short of the signatures needed, regardless of which lines are used, and is rife with fraud, among other things.

“The Recall Vos campaign is committed to ensuring a fair and accurate review of the recall petition signatures,” recall proponents said in a statement. “However, this can only be effectively conducted once the Wisconsin Supreme Court issues a clarifying order on which legislative district boundaries the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) is to utilize.”

The state Supreme Court’s Dec. 22 ruling that threw out the previous maps barred the Elections Commission from using them for future elections. Meanwhile, the new maps that Dem Gov. Tony Evers signed last month include a provision that they don’t take effect until this fall.

The Supreme Court last week directed the parties involved in the redistricting suit to weigh in on a request from the Elections Commission for the justices to decide which lines should be used for any recall or special elections ahead of this fall.

Republican lawmakers argued the request should be rejected and the commission should exercise its powers to decide which lines to use.

Evers, meanwhile, argued the court should give the parties until Thursday of this week to reach an agreement on which maps should apply.

The court hadn’t ruled on the motions as of early Tuesday afternoon.
