House Speaker Mike Johnson said “the polling is wrong” and predicted wins for both GOP U.S. Reps. Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden.
“You can mark my words, and I hope you repeat it,” Johnson said on WISN 12’s “UpFront,” which is produced in partnership with WisPolitics. “I’m telling you, they’re undercounting Republicans because Republicans are not participating in these polls anymore. I think the polls are going to be off by many, many points, and I think this prognostication that there’s going to be a blue wave is just simply not going to happen.
“People are going out to vote,” Johnson added. “And that enthusiasm on the Republican side is not being registered in the polls. So mark my words, people are going to be very surprised.”
Johnson campaigned with Van Orden Thursday in Platteville and brought up President Donald Trump multiple times in his stump speech. Trump’s job approval in Wisconsin is at 37% in the latest Marquette University Law School poll.
“I’m so proud the president’s traveling the country nonstop,” Johnson said.
Trump is not expected in Wisconsin ahead of Election Day.
“I think he’s done 14 rallies this week, and he’s doing tele-rallies for members as well,” Johnson said. “You’ve never had a second-term president, or any president for that matter, run and put that much energy and time into it. Derrick is running his race in his district because he’s talking about his record, not rhetoric.”
Johnson called Van Orden “one of our fighters.”
“We’ve got to have him back,” Johnson said. “Democrats are spending so much money that they think they can take him out. They are mistaken.”
Meanwhile, Madison-area U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan predicts a wave of Democratic wins in the upper Midwest that will include unseating Steil and Van Orden.
“I think we’re going to pick up three seats in Iowa,” Pocan, who’s helping with efforts for the DCCC, told “UpFront.” “I think we can pick up one in Minnesota, two or three in Michigan. But if we get two seats in Wisconsin, I mean just in the upper Midwest alone, we’re delivering the majority for Hakeem Jeffries.”
Pocan, D-Town of Vermont, said Democrats’ investment in the 1st CD backing Mitchell Berman, who’s attempting to unseat Steil, has paid off.
“There’s a thing called math or science, which is what polling is,” Pocan said. “And when you look at it, we’ve had three public polls we put out there. In August, Bryan Steil was up one. About four to six weeks later, it was dead even. And then two weeks later after that, Berman was up one.”
“It is definitely very much a swing district,” Pocan added. “So the momentum is going in the right direction. He’s a good candidate, closing hard, but every vote will matter.”
