The latest Marquette University Law School poll found little change in the governor’s campaign from a month ago with Dem David Crowley and Republican Tom Tiffany in a tight race.
Among likely voters, 49% of respondents backed Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive. Meanwhile, 46% supported Tiffany, a GOP congressman from Minocqua.
Among registered voters, it was 46-45 for Crowley.
The last poll, conducted shortly after the Aug. 11 primary, found 49% of likely voters backed Crowley, while 44% favored Tiffany. It was tied at 44% apiece among registered voters.
Poll Director Charles Franklin noted a shift among independents. A month ago, they favored Crowley 55-16. In this poll, they backed him 44-18.
“Crowley’s support has dropped off with independents, but that has not moved to Tiffany,” Franklin said. “What it’s moved to is undecided.”
The poll of 843 registered voters was conducted Sept. 16-23, and that sample had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. It included 692 likely voters, and the margin of error with that sample was plus or minus 4.8 percentage points.
Forty-six percent of the sample identified as Republicans when leaners were included, while 32% were Dems and 33% independents. But among likely voters, it was split 45-45.
Franklin said that was a reflection of Dems having a turnout motivation. Eighty-five percent of Dems said they are absolutely certain to vote, while 78% of Republicans said the same.
