Dem gubernatorial candidate Sara Rodriguez has fired her campaign manager “after discovering serious mismanagement and inaccuracies in campaign finance filings she prepared.”

Rodriguez’s campaign didn’t detail the inaccuracies, saying it planned to contact the Ethics Commission today to ensure they are corrected. A check of her January report showed instances of donations possibly being double counted.

The termination of Kara Spencer comes just ahead of Wednesday’s deadline for state campaigns to file new reports detailing their fundraising activity between Jan. 1 and June 30.

“The moment Sara learned of these inaccuracies, she acted swiftly and decisively removed her,” the campaign said in last night’s statement. “The campaign will continue to build support to win in August and beat Tom Tiffany in November.”

In January, Rodriguez’s campaign filed three versions of its initial report. The first came in after the deadline, showing $557,285 raised. The second, filed an hour later, showed $571,285 raised. The final amended report, filed almost two hours after the second, listed $618,285 raised.

The final report showed numerous examples of donations for the same amount from the same donor on the same day, indicating it had possibly been double counted.

For example, there are two entries on the January report for $10,000 donations from Edina, Minnesota physician Robert E Haselow on Dec. 17. The only difference in the two entries is there’s a space before the first donor’s first name on one entry.

The report also listed two $2,500 donations from Kathleen Quinn, a Madison coach, on Nov. 24. One includes a middle initial. The other doesn’t.

Rodriguez last week announced a $1 million TV buy. But AdImpact has yet to track any buys from the campaign.
