Democrat Yee Leng Xiong won the election for state treasurer, as the party reclaimed the only state constitutional office held by Republicans.
Xiong, a Marathon County supervisor, bested GOP incumbent John Leiber who was first elected in 2022. Xiong had 51.1% of the vote to Leiber’s 48.9%, with 96% of the votes counted.
With the victory, Xiong is set to become the first Hmong American elected to statewide office in the United States.
Leiber told WisPolitics in an interview that he viewed the results in Wisconsin and nationally as a referendum on Trump, and “it’s pretty clear that the voters are not happy with what he’s done in this term.”
He called on Republicans to chart a new path without the president.
“The only thing to do is move away from Trump,” Leiber said. “I don’t see a future for the Republican Party with Trump in it.”
