Minocqua Brewing Co. owner Kirk Bangstad filed nomination papers to run for governor. But he wasn’t on the list of candidates who will speak at the Dem convention next weekend.
Bangstad, who has drawn scrutiny over his vow to give out free beer when President Donald Trump dies, filed nomination papers by yesterday’s deadline. The latest update from the state Elections Commission didn’t list how many valid signatures Bangstad turned in; a candidate needs 2,000 to qualify for the ballot.
Several Dem campaigns for governor told WisPolitics yesterday that the state party has informed them of the speaking order for June 14 at the state convention, when the gubernatorial contenders are scheduled to address the crowd in Madison.
The campaigns said the speaking order is: Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, former DOA Secretary Joel Brennan, Milwaukee County Exec David Crowley, state Sen. Kelda Roys, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, state Rep. Francesca Hong and former WEDC CEO and Secretary Missy Hughes.

The campaigns said they were told in order to qualify for a speaking slot, the candidate had to be in good standing with the party and turn in nomination papers to run.
The state Dem Party didn’t immediately comment yesterday on why Bangstad wasn’t on the list.
Bangstad told WISN-TV’s “UpFront” last month that he’d win the primary if he’s barred from speaking at convention.
Bangstad and the seven Dems slated to speak at convention all turned in nomination papers by yesterday’s deadline.
Former Dem state Rep. Brett Hulsey, who made a failed bid for governor in 2014 and had launched another campaign for the office, didn’t file nomination papers, according to the latest update from the Elections Commission.
On the GOP side, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, of Minocqua, was the only candidate to file after Andy Manske, a medical services technician from Greendale, didn’t turn in signatures.
