Tuesday’s gubernatorial election underscored that Republicans have an acute problem in Dane County and suburban Milwaukee. And insiders say that is helping Dems overcome their eroding support in rural Wisconsin.

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, formally declared victory over Dem rival Mandela Barnes this morning as several national media outlets called the race for the incumbent. Meanwhile, The Associated Press and other outlets have called the 3rd CD for Republican Derrick Van Orden.

GOP construction exec Tim Michels has conceded to Dem Gov. Tony Evers. With 92 percent of the vote in, Evers was at 51 percent, while Michels was at 48 percent.

Dems beat back a GOP attempt to secure a two-thirds majority in the Assembly, though Republicans were on path to clinch it in the Senate. Results were still out in several top Assembly races. But even if Republicans swept all of them, they would only reach 64 seats.

Dem AG Josh Kaul won reelection as Wisconsin’s top cop, narrowly beating GOP Fond du Lac County DA Eric Toney. In his concession speech, Toney wished Kaul well in his second term and said he looks forward to working with
