U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, issued a call to her fellow Dems Friday night, saying Wisconsinites needed them to stand up to stop the erosion of their way of life.

Baldwin said President Trump promised during the campaign last fall that he would fight for the little guy. But his budget shows that was a “scam.”

“The people of Wisconsin need champions, and they are not going to find them in the Republican Party,” Baldwin said. “That’s why they’re counting on us.”

Baldwin pointed to “buy American” legislation she wrote that she said supported American steel, iron and workers. It was included in a water infrastructure bill that passed the Senate 95-3. But Baldwin said Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, and his fellow House Republicans stripped it from the bill after being lobbied by foreign interests.

She said there’s a lesson in that experience, that Wisconsinites are fed up with getting “screwed over” by drug companies, hedge fund managers and Russian steel companies.

“But what they’re even more fed up with is hearing politicians say that they’ll take on these special interests and then watching them go off to Washington and do exactly the opposite,” she said.
