Centennial Kick-off Celebration

Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda

Madison…The 100th Anniversary State Capitol Commemorative Commission is announcing the first of many events to mark the 100th year of the Capitol.

Centennial Kick-off Celebration
Tuesday, January 31, 10 a.m.

All current and former legislative leaders, governors and Supreme Court justices as well as individuals who have played an important role overseeing the Capitol have been invited to the ceremony. Governor Scott Walker is the keynote speaker and former Governor Tommy Thompson is the featured guest. The event is open to the public and Capitol employees are welcome to attend.

“We are so fortunate to have the most beautiful Capitol in the country,” said Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester), Commission Co-Chair. “I’m excited to begin the year-long celebration for this monument of democracy.”

“This year marks an important milestone for our state,” said Senator Roger Roth (R-Appleton), Commission Co-Chair. “I would like to welcome visitors from around the state and nation to celebrate with us and witness the impressiveness of the Capitol for themselves.”

Beginning on Tuesday in the Capitol Rotunda the Wisconsin Historical Society exhibit entitled, “A Century of Stories – Celebrating 100 years at the Capitol” will be on display. The exhibit features a range of topics from politics to the arts, and panels profile not just governors and lawmakers but also custodians, clerks and security guards who all played an influential role in our capitol’s history. The exhibit will be displayed throughout the year on the ground floor rotunda.

The commission is organizing events throughout the year, including a centennial flower garden, a special edition of Concerts on the Square and a privately funded gala. A Wisconsin Historical Society book and Wisconsin Public Television documentary are also in the works.
