Testimony Tailgate for Kids: Advocates to converge at budget hearing

Champions of neighborhood public schools, parents, grandparents, teachers planning huge presence at first Joint Finance Committee hearing

Advocates for public schools will be out in full force at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 3 across from Ullsvik Hall at UW-Platteville, when they host the Testimony Tailgate for Kids before the first Joint Finance Committee hearing.

“Parents, educators and everyone who loves their neighborhood public schools are watching closely to see what the state budget does for students and public schools,” said Heather DuBois Bourenane. “We’re not leaving our concerns to chance – we’ll be here to raise the issues that must be addressed in the state budget. Wisconsin can afford to invest in thriving communities – and restoring funding for public schools is the starting point. But it also means supporting families and protecting our natural resources.”

Media is invited to the Testimony Tailgate for Kids at 8:30 a.m. Public school and community activists will proceed together at 8:45 a.m. to register to testify at the Joint Finance Committee hearing. Testimony in front of legislators begins at 10 a.m. at Ullsvik Hall.

Advocates are looking for a commitment from legislators to include the governor’s proposed increase in per-pupil aid for public school students as a starting point, increases in funding for special education and rural schools, as well as to halt further expansion of voucher schools that are funded through reductions from neighborhood public schools.

Public school advocates will be joined by other issue advocates to call on legislators to pass a budget that fully invests in thriving communities and is fully vetted by the public.  “We have seen too many midnight motions in recent years that ignore concerns raised by the public. We’re calling on legislators to listen to the people and invest our tax dollars in the programs and services – like our excellent public schools – that allow our communities to thrive.”
