Sen. Erpenbach: The facts behind the Republican budget: A story of missed opportunities

On Wednesday, the Senate voted on the Republican version of the State Budget. The GOP budget removes Wisconsin’s opportunity to make historic investments in our communities and keeps in place massive tax breaks for the wealthy. After Democrats on the Joint Committee on Finance fought for Governor Evers’ proposals, Senate Democrats followed lead and introduced amendments to keep in place the most crucial and the most requested aspects of the People’s Budget, including Medicaid expansion, fully funding education, protecting drinking water, and enacting tax fairness. The Republican decision to not expand Medicaid is the most baffling, and financially irresponsible decision

Rep. Macco: Supports budget that invests in the Green Bay Area

Green Bay…Earlier this week, the state Assembly and Senate approved a new two-year (2019-2021) spending plan for our state.  It now goes to the Governor for his signature.  State Representative John Macco (R-Ledgeview) released the following statement: “The WISCONSIN Budget keeps moving our state forward while maintaining good stewardship of taxpayer money.  Not only does it take care of needs statewide, it also takes care of needs in the greater Green Bay area.  I would like to thank the Joint Finance Committee for addressing those needs and including several that I requested.  I am pleased that the Assembly and Senate

Rep. Kind: Speaks on the Supreme Court decision on Partisan Redistricting

WASHINGTON – Today, the Supreme Court ruled on two cases, Rucho v. Common Cause and Lamone v. Benisek, that federal courts do not have a role to play in deciding partisan gerrymandering claims in a 5 to 4 decision. This ruling allows states to make the final decision in partisan gerrymandering cases by declining to set a constitutional standard. “The Supreme Court ruling today gives the green light for elected officials to choose their voters, instead of their voters choosing them, through partisan gerrymandering. This decision completely fails to protect our constitution and disenfranchises voters already lacking rights under the Equal Protection Clause. I

Rep. Neubauer: Fight against Partisan Gerrymandering will continue

MADISON — On Thursday, the Supreme Court of the United States released its final decisions from the October 2018 term, including a decision addressing the question of partisan gerrymandering in Rucho v. Common Cause. Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement in response: “Gerrymandering disrupts and dishonors our democracy. It allows politicians to choose their people, instead of people choosing their politicians. It is fundamentally ‘incompatible with democratic principles,’ as the majority conceded. That fundamental incompatibility should make partisan gerrymandering an unacceptable practice in Wisconsin and throughout our country. “While the federal courts can no longer intervene in partisan gerrymandering,

Sen. Hansen: Supreme Court decision on redistricting

“It is no surprise that the U.S. Supreme Court has sided with the Republicans on the issue of gerrymandering.   Just as it is no surprise that the State Supreme Court routinely sides with the Republicans on cases related to the preservation of or limitations on the GOP’s political power. “The era of non-partisan impartiality and ruling on the law has long been over with the appointment and election of activist conservative judges on our highest courts and our state and nation are worse off for it. “Because we can no longer trust either court to do what is best for

WisDems: Statement on SCOTUS gerrymandering decision

Contact: Courtney Beyer, courtneyb@wisdems.org The following is a statement from Democratic Party of Wisconsin chair Ben Wikler on the Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold extreme partisan gerrymandering: “Today’s unconscionable decision by a partisan 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court shows just how far the GOP is willing to bend the Constitution in order to lock in power at the expense of democracy. Today’s decision will join Citizens United in the hall of fame of anti-democracy Supreme Court decisions.” “In 2011, Republicans in Wisconsin set out to draw maps that diluted the power of Democratic voters to ensure indefinite Republican control. The result has
