Senate Republicans today voted along party lines to approve new rules for the chambers, including a provision banning anyone in the gallery from recording the proceedings.

Republicans shot down five Dem proposals to add new rules, including one that would’ve allowed the Senate to again consider an appointment after it’s been rejected by a body despite a change in state law last month barring that.

Another sought to require majority Republicans to release provide details on payments to outside attorneys within seven days of receiving a bill and another to require a two-thirds vote to approve legislation between a general election and the beginning of the next legislative session.

Dems chided Republicans for not engaging in debate over the rules, including one that sought to ban floor votes between midnight and 9 a.m. That prompted Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, to accuse Dems of hypocrisy, noting longtime Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, presided over numerous floor periods that went past midnight while president of the Senate.

All were rejected along party lines other than the appointment proposal. Sen. Lena Taylor, D-Milwaukee, joined Republicans in rejecting that proposal.
