The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that the extension for drivers over age 60 – whose regular driver license expired after March 12, 2020 – expires May 21, 2021. The DMV extended the renewal period to help keep these higher-risk customers safe during the health emergency. “With more and more Wisconsin residents getting vaccinated, we believe we can provide a safe environment for these customers to visit a service center and complete this important activity,” Kristina Boardman, Wisconsin DMV Administrator said. “Drivers over age 64 will need to visit a DMV to renew their

WisDems: Gov. Evers Vetoes GOP roadblocks to American Rescue Plan funds, gets relief out to small businesses

(MADISON) —  Yesterday, Gov. Evers announced $420 million in small business relief, which has the potential to help approximately 84,000 Wisconsin small businesses, and vetoed Republican attempts to slow down the distribution of American Rescue Plan funds.   The $420 million is part of the $600 million Gov. Evers plans to distribute to small businesses from the ARP – three times as much small business relief as the Republican plan would have provided. The grants will be awarded through the new Wisconsin Tomorrow Small Business Recovery grant program, a collaboration between the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Department of

The set of recommendations comes after in-depth discussions among the bipartisan group over the last seven months, bringing all voices to the table to address racial disparities within the state. Co-Chairs Rep. Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) and Rep. Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) led the group in finding avenues forward that had the backing of both communities of color and law enforcement. Following the release, here’s what folks are

State Rep. Vruwink: What I heard at state budget hearing

UW-Whitewater hosted the first of three public hearings on the state budget on April 9. I’m pleased that the first of the “road show” hearings was held in my district. Other hearings followed in Rhinelander and Menomonie. The fourth and final hearing will be held online on Wednesday, April 28.   I want to thank UW-Whitewater for hosting a well-organized event, with distancing between people seated in the Irving L. Young auditorium, mandatory face coverings, and microphone cleansing when people chose to take their masks off to speak. The University also set up an excellent audio/visual system so that people

Milwaukee Alder Khalif J. Rainey, Russell W. Stamper, II: End to senseless violence in Milwaukee must come soon

A teenager is gunned down in broad daylight in Sherman Park, just feet away from a basketball court. Shocked and heartbroken loved ones arrive and the horror is captured by TV news cameras. The trauma and the pain are instantly seared into our memory. It’s sadly an all too familiar scene, as we have seen a tremendous amount of senseless violence in the past couple of days here in Milwaukee. As of Wednesday, the Milwaukee Police Department has reported 38 homicides so far in 2021. At least six minors, between the ages of 13 and 17, have been killed by

A video of the interview can be found here, and excerpts are below.   “From my standpoint, I am all for infrastructure. Our roads and bridges have been ignored for far too long, but we’ve already over-authorized spending. Let’s repurpose that amount of money. We don’t have to borrow more money, and we don’t have to further mortgage our
