PPAWI: Statement on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade

WISCONSIN—January, 20,2023—The following is a statement from Tanya Atkinson, president of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin on the 50th Anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Decision. “As we embark on the 50th anniversary of Roe v Wade, we are reminded of its significance and what has been lost. This year’s anniversary will weigh heavy on many of us because of what was taken away last summer when the Supreme Court erased five decades of legal precedent—taking away our power to make personal medical decisions—and handing that power to politicians. However, still, we are galvanized by the hope and possibilities of what

Dept. of Natural Resources: Help protect our streams from aquatic invasive species

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds anglers out for the early inland trout season to help protect our streams from aquatic invasive species. Some fishing streams may contain invasive species, and if care is not taken, those species can accidentally be transferred to another. New Zealand mudsnails have one of the highest potentials of spreading from one water to another. Only 4-6 millimeters in length, they can easily get stuck in the mud and picked up on boots, waders and gear. Felt-soled boots are particularly susceptible to these snails as they can lodge into and under the

Sen. Hesselbein: More for millionaires than for the middle class plan takes center stage

This week my Republican colleagues held a vote on a hasty, last-minute resolution to put an advisory referendum on the ballot asking Wisconsinites about current law.   NOT, of course, the current law in our state that drew overwhelming concern from voters last fall. I was proud to join Governor Evers and my Democratic colleagues in calling on the majority party to give Wisconsinites a voice on our antiquated abortion statute that predates the right for the women it impacts to vote. Republicans on party lines rejected giving you a voice on that issue, choosing instead to add to our spring

Dept. of Natural Resources: Multi-year invasive species case concludes with convictions

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the conclusion of a multi-year law enforcement investigation and prosecution related to the illegal distribution of more than 960 invasive crayfish by several wholesale-level distributors. A number of invasive crayfish were distributed, including red swamp, mini orange, electric blue and others. Although these species are native to the southern U.S., they are not native to the northern U.S., including Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. Due to the damage these crayfish can cause to native plant and animal populations, the species are illegal to possess in Wisconsin. “Some of the more popular invasive

UW-Madison: Teaching indigenous land dispossession in Wisconsin and beyond

MADISON — In the 1860s, the University of Wisconsin was granted more than 230,000 acres of land to make pursuing an education in agriculture, military tactics, mechanical and classical arts attainable for the state’s working class. This was the mission of land-grant universities, as dictated by the 1862 Morrill Act. But where did the land granted to the university come from? While land-grant universities produce important scholarship and research that gives back to their states, they can do so because of the wealth and real estate gained from the dispossession of Indigenous lands. In total, 1,337,895 acres of land across

Derrick Van Orden shares the blame for the overturning of Roe, and unfazed by the consequences of Republicans’ war on women, Van Orden wants to further limit reproductive freedom.   Reminder, Van Orden:  DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:“As Americans grapple with a less free world that Republicans made by ripping away reproductive freedom, Derrick Van Orden is working to make it
