The Republican-led Wisconsin State Legislature has now gone three full months, nearly 100 days, without passing a single bill, amid a deadly, worsening pandemic, a devastated economy, a massive unemployment crisis, a health coverage crisis, and the largest protest movement in U.S. history.

Negrophobia during this period laid the groundwork for northern segregation and Jim Crow that was to follow. It was the precursor to redlining, restrictive housing covenants, hyper-segregation of schools, race-based policing policies etc. All things that were prevalent in northern cities such as Milwaukee and Chicago; and all of which are at the crux of the Black Lives Matter movement today.

A war is raging in America, but its most visible battle–the one being waged in the streets–isn’t its most consequential. In city halls and state capitols across the country, the real fight for America’s safety, security, and soul is being fought, and won, behind closed doors.

Rather than rally Americans to stand shoulder to shoulder against this deadly illness, they did their best to tear the people apart and, of all things, make the wearing of a face mask a divisive political statement.
