DC Wrap: Johnson backs continuing resolution over omnibus; Biden praises Baldwin on same-sex marriage bill

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says he supports passing a bill temporarily funding federal government obligations over a long-term solution because he wants to give the GOP-led House next session a chance to create a concrete solution. The Oshkosh Republican alongside U.S. Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Mike Lee, R-Utah, Rick Scott, R-Fla., in a D.C. news conference said the plan they announced this week would fund the government through Feb. 3. They don’t want to force a government shutdown, but they also don’t want to see mandatory and discretionary spending to continue to grow beyond the nation’s annual revenue.

Bryan Steil says likely future House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will definitely end proxy voting “on day one.” The Janesville Republican at a WisPolitics.com DC luncheon this week said McCarthy, R-Calif., will also likely get rid of virtual participation almost altogether. Steil, who is part of McCarthy’s transition team, added the only possible exception he could see would be to allow under certain circumstances outside experts, in the tech industry in particular, to provide virtual testimony.
