Josefine Jaynes, at age 18 took a gap year after high school to run for the state Assembly and try to flip a southwestern GOP seat once held by Democrat Pat Lucey. That didn’t work out. But now she’s a UW-Madison student from southwestern Wisconsin’s Readstown and part of the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic National Convention – being inspired by Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris.

Young Wisconsin delegates to the Democratic National Convention say President Joe Biden stepping out of the race to make way for Vice President Kamala Harris has brought new excitement to the race among youth and is paving the way for a new generation to lead. 

“I felt the punch in the gut when President Biden stood down,” Hartman said. “But within an hour or two, he threw his support to Vice President Harris, and suddenly there was this belief.”

Young people are excited by Kamala Harris’ presidential bid and will show up to vote this November, Ana Wilson, a 19-year-old first-time delegate from Wauwatosa, tells WisPolitics.
