MADISON, Wis. – Today, Attorney General Brad Schimel announced his appointment of Wisconsin native Sopen Shah as a Deputy Solicitor General for the State of Wisconsin.
“Wisconsin is lucky to have added another attorney as highly skilled as Sopen to the team at the Wisconsin Department of Justice,” said Attorney General Schimel. “Her Ivy League education, private sector experience, and federal judicial clerkships provide a unique skill set that will prove beneficial to litigation strategy. Sopen has proven to be an incredibly disciplined attorney with a respect for the rule of law that will make her the perfect fit on our team.”
A native of Appleton, Shah graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude. In 2004, she was Wisconsin’s Junior Miss and placed in the top five in national competition. Shah began her career as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company and then worked as a financial analyst for Bloomberg in Washington, D.C., where she appeared on TV and the radio to comment on the defense sector. Shah is a 2015 Yale Law School graduate, where she served as the Managing Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Most recently, Shah served as a law clerk for Judge Debra Ann Livingston on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City and previously clerked for then-district court Judge Amul R. Thapar on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, who now sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
The Office of the Solicitor General represents the State of Wisconsin before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the federal circuit courts of appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Wisconsin’s Office of the Solicitor General was instrumental in obtaining a stay from the Supreme Court of the United States last year that stopped the implementation of the Clean Power Plan.
