MADISON – Governor Scott Walker proclaimed September as Workforce Development Month, highlighting the state’s talent development efforts to provide Wisconsin employers with a sustainable pipeline of workers to help grow the economy. Throughout the month, the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) and partners will showcase innovative strategies that lead Wisconsin students and workers to good-paying jobs in growing industries.
“As our economy continues to grow and we plan for thousands of new, great-paying opportunities through investments by Foxconn, Haribo and other employers that are locating or expanding in Wisconsin, it is critical to build awareness of the services and talent development programs that are available today to Wisconsin employers and workers,” Governor Walker said. “In particular, Foxconn’s $10 billion investment will bring 13,000 family-supporting jobs to Wisconsin and our investments in workforce and economic development have prepared Wisconsin for this once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring good-paying jobs and years of continued prosperity to our residents.”
DWD offers proven talent development strategies, such as Youth and Registered Apprenticeship and the Wisconsin Fast Forward worker training grant program. These and other programs are essential to help students and workers develop the high demand job skills needed to fill jobs today and in the future. DWD’s recent launch of WisConnect, available at InternshipWisconsin.com, also provides invaluable tool for developing the future workforce by connecting college students with Wisconsin employers that offer internships.
“An unemployment rate of 3.2 percent, record total employment in 2017 and a top 5 labor force participation rate demonstrates that our workforce development efforts are working,” DWD Secretary Allen said. “Throughout September we will highlight our initiatives to train, place and advance Wisconsin workers into good-paying, family supporting employment.”
DWD is Wisconsin’s lead talent development agency, working with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, the Wisconsin Technical College System, Department of Public Instruction, University of Wisconsin System, the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Wisconsin Workforce Development Association, Wisconsin’s 11 Workforce Development Boards, and other stakeholders to develop Wisconsin’s talent and provide employers with workers who have the skills needed to succeed in today’s economy.
DWD leaders and regional workforce partners will recognize Workforce Development Month across the state through business tours, recognition events and other activities.
A variety of recruitment events also will occur throughout the month, as well.
