Green Bay, Wisconsin – On Thursday, in conjunction with End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin’s (End Abuse) Statewide Conference, Collective Liberation: Movement Building for the Years Ahead, members of the public will be invited to attend a special event sponsored by the Wisconsin Humanities Council entitled Public Domestics: an experience of the book “Infamous Mothers” with Sagashus Levingston.
Ms. Levingston is a PhD candidate and instructor in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison whose writing explores how real-life narratives describing Black motherhood can counter pervasive stereotypes, such as the “welfare queen” “the prostitute” or “the drug addict” and could help produce a more just, humane and creative society.
Starting at 3:30 p.m., pages from Infamous Mothers will be on display giving participants the ability to walk through parts of the book. At 4:30 p.m., Ms. Levingston will read from the book and lead a discussion about what the stories of marginalized mothers have to teach us about our society and about ourselves.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Sagashus Levingston will be presenting and highlighting her work in conjunction with our statewide conference,” said Patti Seger, Executive Director of End Abuse. “Her writing is an inspiring example of the justice-focused creativity and passion that we at End Abuse try to apply to our work every day, and we hope that many members of the public will take advantage of this exciting opportunity to learn and reflect with one of the leading minds in the movement to end gendered and racial oppression.”
