Milwaukee, Wis. (September 15, 2017) – For the third straight year, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital ranks among the nation’s top performing academic medical centers, according to an annual study by Vizient, an alliance of United States academic medical centers and hospitals.

Froedtert Hospital is the only academic medical center in Wisconsin to make the list.
In national rankings released today, Froedtert Hospital rose to No. 3 from No. 4 a year ago. The Vizient Quality and Accountability study represents about 95 percent, or 107, of the nation’s academic medical centers.

“Sustaining our leadership position over three years in a national field of highly accomplished academic medical centers speaks powerfully about our unrelenting focus on quality,” said Cathy Jacobson, president and chief executive officer of Froedtert Health. “Of all the health care quality rankings out there, Vizient is our ‘true north’ because it evaluates all care rather than just a certain subset of patients or conditions, and stringently compares us to peer organizations in areas that truly make a difference in improving health care quality.”

In addition to the academic medical center ranking for Froedtert Hospital, the Froedtert & MCW health network was the only state health system to have all of its hospitals recognized. The Vizient study measuring the performance of community hospitals ranked Froedtert & MCW St Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend, No. 2 and Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, No. 9 out of 161 participating community hospitals.
Vizient also recognized innovation and management excellence. Froedtert Health received three separate awards, bringing its overall total to six—more than any other health system participating in the 2017 study. The three additional awards honored Froedtert Health’s work in advancing the use of digital health tools to improve access to care and the patient experience; initiatives in cost reduction and efficiency; and effective supply chain sourcing and management.

The 12 top-performing academic medical centers that earned Vizient’s 2017 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award are:
1. Mayo Clinic – Rochester
2. NYU Langone Health
3. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin – Froedtert Hospital
4. Rush University Medical Center

The study criteria reflect the national Institute of Medicine’s six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient-centeredness.

The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health network is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin. It comprises eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls; and St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend. The health network also includes more than 2,700 physicians across more than 30 primary and specialty clinical locations representing the collaboration of Wisconsin’s largest multispecialty physician practice with a community-based physician group. The network’s three hospitals have 825 staffed beds, more than 42,000 annual admissions and nearly one million annual outpatient visits. Froedtert & MCW network physicians have nearly 790,000 annual patient visits at its health centers and clinics. For more information, visit froedtert.com.
