GOP bill would require municipalities cooperate with immigration authorities

Three GOP lawmakers are circulating legislation that would ban municipalities from ignoring a detainer order from federal immigration authorities for someone in local custody.
The bill is similar to one introduced last session that sought to penalize municipalities that restrict their employees' ability to ask about the immigration status of someone who had been charged with certain crimes.
That bill cleared the Assembly, but was not taken up on the Senate floor. GOP Reps. John Spiros and Jesse Kremer and Sen. Steve Nass told colleagues in a memo today the bill was a "substantial development" ...
