In remarks to supporters from across the state, governor highlights Wisconsin’s record of bold conservative reform, Top 10 Status on jobs and education
[Wisconsin Dells, Wis.] – Gov. Scott Walker spoke at the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s state convention this morning, telling grassroots supporters and elected leaders that Republicans can win in 2018 if they rally around bold conservative reform.
As the convention hall applauded Wisconsin’s Top 10 status on jobs and education, the governor made clear Republicans can replicate their 2016 victories to beat Senator Tammy Baldwin and re-elect conservative reformers across the state.
You can read excerpts of his remarks below:
I’m ready. … But I need your help.
We won in 2010 with a grassroots army of volunteers. We won with an even bigger force during the recall election in 2012. And we won with another grassroots flurry in 2014.
These efforts not only helped me and our outstanding Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, they helped create, then grow Republican majorities in the state Assembly and the state Senate. They helped re-elect our great U.S. Senator Ron Johnson. And they brought us victory in Wisconsin during the Presidential election for the first time since 1984 with the election of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
Now, we need your help again.
In 2018, we can defeat Tammy Baldwin and elect a Senator who will actually represent Wisconsin.
With your help, we will help re-elect Jim Sensenbrenner, Paul Ryan, Sean Duffy, Glenn Grothman and Mike Gallagher. With your help, we will re-elect Brad Schimel. With your help, we will maintain Republican majorities in the state Legislature. And yes, with your help, we will keep common sense, conservative leadership in the Governor’s Office.
… the unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since April of 2000. That’s back when Matt and Alex were just five and six years old. Both – by the way – are here this morning. Matt works at Associated Bank in digital and Alex graduates from UW in about two hours.
Plus, the percentage of people working in Wisconsin is one of the best in the country. That’s right: Wisconsin ranks in the Top 10 for the percentage of people in the workforce.
In fact, we rank in the Top 10 in a whole bunch of areas.
Our students rank in the Top 10 for ACT scores. Wisconsin ranks in the Top 10 for high school graduation rates. And we rank in the Top 10 for Fab Labs in our schools.
We rank in the Top 10 in other areas too.
Wisconsin ranks in the Top 10 for the reduction in the overall tax burden. Specifically, in recent years, we outranked 43 other states in reducing taxes. In our budget, we cut income and property taxes again. Both will be lower in 2018 than they were in 2010 before we took office. And the cumulative tax relief since I became Governor through the end of my budget will exceed $8 billion.
We even eliminate an entire tax in this budget. For the first time since 1931, there will be no state tax on your property tax bill. How about that for big, bold reform? …
Ladies and gentlemen, I am more optimistic about the future of this state than I have been at any time during my tenure as your Governor. You see, together, we are moving Wisconsin forward.
Still, there is more work to be done.
I’m ready to do more to lower the burden on the hard-working taxpayers.
I’m ready to do more to improve student success for every child in our state.
I’m ready to do more to build a strong workforce.
I’m ready to do more to support strong families.
I’m ready to do more to help people transition from government dependence to true independence through the dignity of work.
Wisconsin is now a Top 10 state because we went big and we went bold. But we’re not done yet. There is more work to be done.
I’m ready.
I’m ready to do more.
I’m ready to do more to help move Wisconsin forward!
Are you?
