Cable – Governor Scott Walker kicked off the Wisconsin fishing season this morning by catching two walleye on Lake Namekagon in Cable for the 52nd Annual Governor’s Fishing Opener. He released the following statement about the importance of fishing in Wisconsin:
Fishing has long been a time-honored in Wisconsin and every year, people from all over travel here to enjoy our natural resources.
Fishing is so much more than a fun pastime, though. It’s also a major draw for Wisconsin’s tourism industry, which I’m proud to report is thriving. In fact, our tourism economy reached $20 billion in 2016. On top of this, 193,500 jobs in Wisconsin depend on tourism, making it a really big deal.
We’re ranked Number 1 in the Midwest for fun, family atmosphere, uniqueness, affordability, and outdoor recreation – and fishing is a huge part of that.
As we kick off the fishing season today, we encourage fishers from across the nation to come on up to Wisconsin for a visit. We have great scenery, great people, great times, and most importantly – great fishing.
