SUN PRAIRIE – This week the MEUW and it’s 82 community owned, not-for-profit members are celebrating “Public Power Week,” from October 1st thru the 7th. “Since 1929 our members have proven to be a valuable community asset,” said MEUW Executive Director Jeff Stone. “We invite the citizens of our member communities to check with their locally owned utilities for “Public Power Week” related events.”
The MEUW is kicking off “Public Power Week,” with a Proclamation from Governor Scott Walker. In 2016, MEUW members’ payments in lieu of taxes to their municipalities totaled $22,533,799. These payments were injected back into the cities and villages they serve. “Because our members are locally owned, our municipal utilities are able to be responsive to the community’s needs and reflect the values of our local communities,” Stone added. “Not only do our members serve their local communities, we have provided mutual aid to other communities in need even as far away as hurricane ravaged parts of Florida. If you see your local utility truck rolling down the street, give the workers inside a thumbs up and say thank you,” Stone concluded.
