Today Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) issued the following statement on the GOP education plan:

“Democrats believe we need to invest more money in our children and our teachers. The budgets from Walker and his Republican legislators have resulted in more than $1.2 billion lost to public schools over the last six years. More now than ever, teachers are taking money out of their own paychecks to purchase supplies and materials for their students due to funding shortfalls—that just isn’t right. We need to fully fund our schools and better support programs that help all students succeed like Wisconsin’s special education programs, which has been especially hurt these past six years.

“Republicans need to put aside their squabbling and do what’s right for the people of Wisconsin. They should craft a budget in an open and transparent manner. They should pass a budget in a timely manner for municipalities, schools and transportation authorities to plan for the coming year. When many schools in Wisconsin are having trouble keeping their doors open, they don’t have the luxury of waiting for the outcome of petty political battles.”
