Rusk County legislator supports resolution to eliminate the office of the State Treasurer

MADISON – Today, Representative James Edming (R-Glen Flora) voted in favor of Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 3 which would amend the state constitution to eliminate the office of the State Treasurer.

“The State Treasurer has very few duties and the position just is not needed any more,” said Rep. Edming.  “Eliminating this unnecessary position would save valuable taxpayer money and make our government more efficient.”

The State Treasurer’s only constitutionally required duty is to serve on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.  Under SJR 3 the lieutenant governor would replace the treasurer on the board.  Other duties of the State Treasurer have been transferred to the Department of Administration and the Department of Revenue.

“The people of Wisconsin elected the current State Treasurer who ran saying he wished to eliminate the office,” said Rep. Edming.  “It is time to send this amendment to the voters of Wisconsin for their consideration.”

Any amendment to the state constitution must be approved by two consecutive legislatures.  SJR 3 is the second consideration of this amendment by the legislature.  This amendment will now go to the voters for final approval in an April 2018 referendum.
