(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) today applauded President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Congress has long-supported, in a bipartisan manner, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital and moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel-Aviv.

“Today’s decision by President Trump sends a strong message of support for Israel that wavered under the anti-Israeli policies of President Obama,” said Grothman. “Israel should not be the only nation that’s denied placement of embassies in its capital. Israel is America’s strongest, most stable ally in the Middle East, and today’s announcement is an incredibly important step in recognizing its legitimacy.”

Background

Congress voted in 1995 to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital and to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel-Aviv.

The Jerusalem Embassy Act passed the Senate (93-5) and the House (374-37), becoming law in 1995. Past presidents have used a national-security waiver allowed for in the bill to delay moving the embassy up until this point.
