Madison – Representative Joel Kleefisch’s Turkey Donation Program bill signed into law last session is going into effect this hunting season. Turkey hunters in three counties will now have the option of donating their harvested turkey to needy families through the new program.

The DNR stated, “Donated turkeys will be processed free of charge and meat will be provided to local food pantries. For the spring 2017 turkey hunt, three pilot counties, Dodge, Fond du Lac and Jefferson, were chosen. This program will be expanded for the fall turkey hunt later this year.”

The current participating locations are as follows:

  • Dodge County: Pernat-Haase Meats, N4202 Hwy M, Juneau (920) 386-3340
  • Fond Du Lac County: Loehr’s Meat Service, 523 E Main St, Campbellsport (920) 533-4513
  • Jefferson County: Pernat’s Premium Meats, 312 Milwaukee St, Johnson Creek (920) 699-6990

“I’m excited about this new program. It supports a great cause by giving back to the community, said Representative Kleefisch. “I hope many hunters will take advantage of this opportunity so we can grow the program statewide in the near future.”

Turkeys must be taken to a participating location before May 31, 2017. For more information regarding the turkey donation program and instructions on how to make a donation, visit dnr.wi.gov and search keywords “turkey donation.”
