Madison– State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Finance, released the following statement regarding the Department of Administration Annual Fiscal Report:

“Yesterday, taxpayers of Wisconsin received the great news that Wisconsin will be closing 2017 with a $579 million surplus, $111.9 million more than anticipated. This surplus is the second largest closing balance since 2000, further evidence that our fiscal reforms have been, and are continuing to work.

“Now is not the time to stray from our principles. I hope we will set aside a portion of this surplus for a rainy day while reducing borrowing and continuing our commitment to education.

“While states like Illinois are drowning in debt, passing 32% tax increases to stay above water, Wisconsin continues to thrive. Under conservative leadership, Wisconsin taxpayers have seen a state surplus every year since Governor Walker took office, while at the same time cutting billions of dollars in taxes and making historic investments in public education.”
