MADISON – Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point), a member of the Joint Finance Committee, released the following statement today in response to Assembly Republicans’ so-called transportation plan:
“Republicans have had more than six years to fund our transportation infrastructure and ensure its sustainability. Instead, they’ve punted over and over again, increasing the number of potholes across the state and nearly doubling the state’s transportation debt as percentage of revenue since Governor Walker took office. Town roads are going back to gravel and Wisconsin’s roads rank second worst in the nation. A real plan would invest in our roads, bridges, and highways while not penalizing middle class families.
“The Republican ‘plan’ released today does the opposite: it attacks Wisconsin workers by lowering their wages and it also harms small businesses owners by making it harder for them to compete in the market. Instead of focusing on a solution, Republicans have proposed even more ways to make workers and businesses pay for their lack of leadership.
“Republicans have had more than enough time to solve the transportation crisis, and it’s time to bring Democrats to the table to solve the problem. I call on Governor Walker and Republican legislative leaders to put their politics aside and work across the aisle to develop a real plan to fix our transportation infrastructure.”
