MADISON – Today, a federal U.S. District Court ordered Wisconsin’s legislative district boundaries to be redrawn by November 1st of this year. This order follows the court’s ruling last fall that Wisconsin’s legislative boundaries are an “unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.” In response, State Representative Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) released the following statement:

“Today’s court order is a crucial step toward restoring the integrity of our representative democracy. Too many people feel that their vote doesn’t matter and that the system is rigged against them. Three elections after the unconstitutional Republican gerrymander, I’m thrilled that we have been given the opportunity to restore the voices to the people. Voters should be the ones choosing their representatives, not the other way around.

“I call on Governor Walker and Republican lawmakers to redraw Wisconsin’s district maps in a way that ensures that all voters – regardless of political affiliation – have their votes equally represented. The public deserves oversight and transparency, and will not tolerate more secret meetings behind closed doors. The people of Wisconsin are watching.”
